I think my starter is stuck on my 2001 HSE. I jacked it up, put it on stands and crawled under the front to "simply remove the starter" and check it out..... ok, stop here... . what's the joke? I don't understand how I'm supposed to release the bolt on the top side to actually get this thing out. And since it's not as simple as I thought, perhaps some more testing is in order? When I turn the key everything goes dim and nothing happens. It's not the battery, I swapped in a 1000CA battery that I just bought for a motorhome and same result. The vehicle is stuck in park too. Any help with how to proceed is appreciated. I'm new to working on this vehicle, but I have a shop manual PDF, some tools, patience and most important, no money to pay a professional mechanic :D

Well you were exectly right. Somehow the negative battery lead had become just loose enough (just barely) to stop the starter from working. I was initially mislead because of how everything else seemed to work just fine. Thanks for the help!
