I am looking for a 1999 Callaway Range Rover in Niagara Gray. I wanted to find out about how much should I be paying for the vehicle. I located a vehicle in Southern California with 97k miles, in pretty good shape, a/c needs work, sunroof doesn't open, new exhaust is needed and paint job is definitely needed, radio needs to be replaced and AES system is good and in working order. How should I expect to be paying for a vehicle?
Kelly Blue book is of little use. is there a range I should be paying or expect to be paying? $5K-$7,500? less or more.
Any suggestions or recommendations? I need to have a better idea what to expect to pay? No sense over paying for it.
thank you in advance for your help.

You should pay whatever you feel is appropriate for the individual rig. Quite frankly the example you describe above sounds like trash. Owning a Callaway is not all that special. There are many "special editions" that have been produced. They rarely garner the premium that sellers are asking.

I'd pay no more than 2k for that rig.

Callaways aren't that rare, and aren't extremely different than a regular HSE.

The only special edition that's really worth a lot more would be the Linely, due to the fact that their's 6 in existence, and to this day remain the most expensive and exclusive Range Rover ever made.

I think the only other special edition P38's (In the US) that people would pay a premium for would be The Holland & Holland Edition (maybe an extra 1-2k) and the Rhino Edition (1-2k). Possibly the Westminster or Trek edition too, but once again, that 1-2k mark.

There's like a dozen 'special' editions of the P38 in the US alone, all made in different quantities.
Polo Edition- somewhat rare, I've never seen one
Borrego- 100 made
Vitesse- made a couple different years, so there's plenty
Westminster- 2002 only, 300 made
Holland & Holland- 125 in 2000
Rhino- 250 between the two years it was made
Linely- 6, 5 on the other side of the pond, and 1 in the US
Callaway- 220 made
30th Ann. - 200 made
50th Ann. - who knows, they were marketed as a special edition to get rid of the unsold diarrhea green models from '97
Panther - who knows, once again
Homelink Edition - who knows
2000 Vogue (red on red) - no specific number made, but I've seen one for sale
Trek - 20 made
Kensington- no info
Granite Edition- not many made, and someone on this site is hogging two of them all to himself. *wink wink*

And then of course, there's the SSE made by Cameron Concepts.

Edit: Why not get the Holland & Holland or the Callways from this sites classifieds- http://www.rangerovers.net/classifieds.html

That's really hard to say but I wouldn't pay more than $3,500 for it, assuming it passes inspection without mechanical problems but it sounds like that one has been seriously neglected and in that case $2k -$2,500 is realistic.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Callaway uses some mechanical parts that are unique to it, which may create a headache for you.

Yeah, though some of these parts have been figured out by The Rover Genius also known as Scotty. Wasn't it the intake manifold gasket that was thought to be impossible to get, and he got one?

Great advice. I don't feel bad from walking away from the deal.
The linely addition sounds like an interesting hunt for me. I came across one on ebay.uk last month...

I am going to look for a granite edition to see what that's all about. Holland and holland is nice but not my cup of tea.
It's literally impossible. You won't find one for sale here. Because there's one of them in the entire US. It was for sale like six months ago in Detroit, with body damage, and had been neglected. Someone from New York bought it, and I'm sure they're keeping it.

RRToadHall is the one with the Granite editions (one has like 345k on it if I remember correctly) I've tried finding pictures on here but couldn't, though I know they're up here somewhere.

Agreed on this one. In my own looking around, with all the issues you would face with that truck? $2500 would be the most I would pay. So good on ya for walking away. I paid $7000 for mine and I am paying the price now. I wanted a Rangie so much and had the cash on hand. But I did not do my research. Since I have the truck, I have found the forums. Learned alot, fixed a few things and am still learning more.

I still have a leaking thermal plate, a service engine light on, throwing a 4055 code that I need to fix (which I hope is the major leak from my therm plate.) And the book! Icon to address. Buying a P38 is not buying a car. It is taking on a new wife. She will be finiky, she will piss you off at the worst of times, she will make you spend hours trying to understand what the hell is wrong this time. But in the end? She will be loyal, steadfast and strong as all get out if you treat her right! Cheers on your search mate! My Rangie needs alot of help, I would not have bought this one if I had done the homework you are doing now.

That's one of the best ways to describe a P38 I've ever read.

Though I'd argue it's more like a mail order bride. You won't know what you get until you already have it, and it's too late ;)

I hear what you're saying. I need to better manage my expectations. I have owned Land Rovers throught the years and Defenders as well. My last defender was a 1994 Beluga Black Defender that I helped restore to showroom condition. What I am most worried about is that the Range Rovers are more electronic than the Defenders I would tinker with. Defenders were easier to get to things. I worked on what I could handle and left it to one of the shops for the more difficult items/issues. I am up for the challenge-just trying not to tap into the 401k funds and piss off upper management again.

Here is a picture of the defender I worked on.

Yeah. She looks pretty neglected, it's a good idea to pass on it. And that exhaust is wow... I thought mine was rusted bad.
I just noticed that the sticker on the center console is the number of the vehicle, kinda nifty. If the person who has The Callaway 007 doesn't call their Rangie James, then they need to reconsider their life decisions and sell it.

There is no way that that's a southern california car - or a california car at all with rust on the exhaust like that. Must be a recent transplant. Glad you avoided that one

#19 ·
Yeah, most definitely not a CA car. My P38 spent most of its life in NJ and Massachusetts and doesn't have that kind rust. Though it did have rust protection done. Congrats nonetheless! . If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for her?
1st thing is 1st, get that interior back together! And get some stock wheels on her!

Though I'd take care of the exhaust on that too. Like now. The Callaway would sound great with a Magnaflow exhaust.

Yes I agree on all your refinements and suggestions. I am bringing it in to the rover specialist [vinnnie] in new jersey. Magna exhaust will be installed without a doubt and thinking about powder coating the rims to look like this.

Radio is heading to roverville aka gbradio to be brought back to life and ipod jack to be installed.
New Headliner. Ill start another thread when it is in my garageto show progress.

My wheels are that color. Graphite they call it.

I love them, they look really good with my window tint, but I've been toying with painting them back to the original silver lately. I don't know why, I just kinda miss how bright they were when it was really clean.

On the plus side though, the graphite doesn't show brake dust.
