That makes two of us. I lined up like a retard in front of the local Land Rover dealership in August 2005 (paying full list and being raped on some bling accessories) because the RRS looked hot and I wanted something different, elegant and comfortable for my daily commute, couldn't care less about off-roading. In short order I bought 21" rims, vroom vroom exhaust... It took me a good 6 months to figure out the "other" side of the Sport. :wink:

And I make three. I don't know anyone who bought an RRS thinking "I'm gonna go wheelin". I'm glad I got into off roading too... it's a whole new dimension that most will never know.

Well sure, not Rubicon-style "wheelin" per se, but perhaps not wanting to be turned around by every little mud bog or washout on the forest service road to a weekend hike, or the unplowed service road to x-country skiing, or just up <relative's> 1/2 mile driveway after a snow dump or the creek floods, or driving on the beach without fear of getting stuck. Light stuff that any high-clearance 4x4 can do, but a lot of street-oriented sporty SUVs can't. Seems to me these would be some of the key reasons why someone would buy an RRS over an X5, ML, XC90, etc. I'm sure you guys are right about the image thing, but I just don't get it. I just can't imagine paying all the concessions that go along with capability (price, mileage, reliability, performance, etc.) just for the image of something you don't intend to actually do. I wouldn't be able to get past the thought that I was wasting such a capable vehicle. I'm glad you all eventually did take it out, tho.

All I initially wanted was a nice SUV (first SUV for me) for my labrador to come on long adventures with us in comfort rather than sitting on our laps in the front seat - he's the true owner, I'm just the chauffeur.

However, as soon as I went over that offroading jungle gym at the dealership and leaned over 35 degrees, I thought I was getting 2 vehicles for the price of 1 and was hooked - had to begin to explore all the rest of the unpaved roads in the world. 4 days later, with 230 miles on it, was already a member of the local LR club and doing our first river/mud crossing. Never had so much fun since then...85k miles later...still puts a **** eating grin on my face every time I drive it.

wow lol. i asked a simple question about Nittos and Coopers and the discussion went on a unforeseen tangent.

i'm proud to be sport owner. it's a rare vehicle to see driven around. i know it's not as rare as a Lamborghini or Ferrari but hell, it's not a Honda is what i mean. we're in our own little club. hell, i hardly see land rovers in general. i think it's awesome when you pass one and you and other driver give each other that all too familiar head nod cause you both know that the other has great taste in vehicles.

it was love at first sight with my sport. it's got more buttons than i've ever seen in one place other than an airplane lol, it looks HOT, it's a range and therefore carries all the prestige of one. the bottome line is, a rrs is the refined YOUNG gentleman's off roading vehicle.

I'm curious for an update on the Cooper 285/50/20s. Any downsides since you've had them? Any rubbing? I looked at the pics and it looks like you were at full articulation...

Any big hit to MPG, handling, noise, etc?

Would you mind posting a few more up-close pictures?

I also have the other style 20" Supercharged wheels on my RRS SC (I think they are referred to as the snowflake wheels) and I'm pretty sure they are the same width/offset as the Stormers.

Here is a pic of the Cooper Zeon LTZ 275/45r20 vs stock 275/40r20.
285/50r20 are far to large to fit on the RRS.
However, the 275/45r20 fit fine. No RUB even at full down, full turn.

I'm glad i found this thread and had been doing some proactive research on tires as i picked up a few bolts and nails downtown here earlier this week..... I've only had the truck for two weeks. I will say the Zeon's are in every way louder than the Michelin Lattitude HP's they replaced and add vibration to the steering wheel at most speeds but not a deal breaker and they look great.

Vibration? I don't like hearing that, since I'm having mine mounted up tomorrow. Maybe they weren't balanced correctly?

Agreed - I've had my 275/45-20 Zeons on for 20K+ and have never had vibrations - they can be difficult to balance. Be aware that as they wear they get even louder - still love them. I've pulled out multiple screws with no flats, they protect the rims far better, and (of course) do great off tarmac. They have great dry grip for an AT, but be aware that wet grip is below the OE Summer Conti's.

Make sure your wheels are balanced by a shop equipped with a Hunter Road Force balancer. It is the only spin balancer approved by Land Rover for its vehicles and the one machine out there that will balance tricky tires / wheels combos every time. I have gone through my fair share of wheels with both Sport and LR4 (from 21" staggered setups to 18" oversized A/T tires and everything in between) and never once experienced any vibrations. thanks for the feedback guys i was worried about that. I now feel that the shop i had do the work (a local Goodyear service shop) did not do an acceptable job in spite of the manager reporting they worked on balancing for 2 hours which was a red flag to me.

I did look up the balancing equipment you listed and the shop does have this equipment, i just don't think the tech was skilled enough to provide the desired result.. I'll put in a call to the manager to have it re-worked

This is bad news for them on top of the greasy mess they made on my Almond leather while doing the work. It appears 5 minutes was spent balancing the tires and the remainder of the 2 hours was spent dirtying my interior

Running 275/45-20 LTZs. Yes, they are a bit louder than the Contis, but not unacceptable. Dry traction is similar, off road much improved, and so is snow. I only got 16K miles out of the Contis. A longer life from a harder compound was a selling feature for me too. Very happy after 5k+ miles.

Did you ever get your wheels rebalanced? I mounted up my Cooper Zeon LTZs last night and I couldn't be happier. They are balanced perfectly and feel smooth as silk up to 100mph (ran out of road) haha. And they're not noisy at all considering the aggressive tread pattern.
