As I am sure you know already, MY2010 and 11 navigation data is on a hard drive and may only be updated by a dealer with a special upload tool, so I'd check with them to see if there is a MY2012 map update for your specific VIN. I wouldn't hold my breath for new features to be added though, usually map updates are just what they sound like, they don't add any functionality to the system other than the latest database of streets and POIs.

Of course umbertob and others are the experts as I really only know what I've been told (or read here) however here is a little"fyi" you can take with a grain of salt...

I asked the techs at my dealer about the new SW/info-tainment system in MY2012+ being compatible with 2010-11. They said it's not just the software but the unit itself making it impossible to “upgrade”. The lead tech said the SW interface as now seen in MY2012 RRS & Evoque was designed specifically for the new XJ and that LR/Jaguar is essentially"cramming" it in to fit the 2012 XF, RRS & Evoque.

For example he said the SW/info-tainment system in MY2009-11 XF's was designed specifically for the XF which is why it was not introduced across the Jaguar line. That said, a modified version of the XF interface was used for MY2010-11 RRS & FSRR (see my early 2010 posts where I compared the two - they're almost identical). Then he said LR/Jaguar wanted to standardize the SW systems therefore they’ve “forced” the new XJ system in the 2012 XF, Evoque and RRS.

Speaking strictly to the Jaguar brand he said the MY2009-11 XF SW interface is far superior to the (modified) XJ version they're trying to“cram” in the 2012 XF, Evoque & RRS. He said the system works beautifully in the XJ but that they’ve had many issue with it in the 2012 XF & RRS.

So I guess it's true when our mother's told us that the grass is not always greener.
:)

As always the information I post is based on the SCIENTIFIC FACT that I know nothing!

Thanks for the feedback...sadly though to upgrade our SW is much like upgrading our cell phone; to get the better system one needs to buy a new phone...capitalism at its best!

I suspected as much. It's very slow to react when you want to skip a song on iPod, it takes ages to offer the next screen after you've typed in a letter in the destination field, etc.

The 2012 system feels like it's running a software that's too complex for it. I was thinking of downgrading to the earlier version, but your post suggests that's not possible.

So, the 2012 model has an inferior interface, and an inferior speaker system. Bummer.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. I think a more fair assessment is the system is too complex for its own good! After all, according to my tech it is a great system (for the XJ) it just may not be a "perfect fit" for the RRS, & Evoque./:(
