I just picked up an SD rack last week. I was surfing craigslist and found a guy selling a 1998 HSE with an SD rack on it. I called him up and asked if he would sell the rack separately. I offered him $400 and he took it! He had no idea what the rack was and actually didn't like it much. I rushed over to take it off before he sold the truck. He actually sold the truck to the first person who saw it half hour after I got the rack. Anyway, the rack is in great shape with no rust. I now see why these are so expensive...they are contoured to the roof with the low profile and solid mounting. I am really excited and got a screaming deal!

Here are some pics:

awesome deal on a great looking rack. I picked mine up from Roverland parts a couple weeks ago when they had a 10% off coupon.

I had never seen one in person, and then the day after I put mine on there was a P38 riding around near where I live with one on. Irony. lol

You're going to make a replica??
Shhhh :thumb:
Got a few projects to complete before the easy one (having one to make something from is always easier than starting from scratch with Scott's stuff :thumb: ).

I've got a fabricator/engineer in one of the units opposite. If anyone has any designs that you need costing up, let me know and I'll ask him to do it. He only opened a few months ago so could do with the work.

That Rock Rover front bumper looks like a **** dinner tray from the top
I know some RR's had a picnic tray, but I didn't know you had to order a front bumper to set it on.

I was going to buy that from Roverland and then I found one for $300. It must be the month of Safety Devices Rack or something, I've never seen so many pop up for sale in such a short time.

everybody else is just getting lucky! I have been checking craigslist on the five states closest to me for racks or rovers with racks and the only one I saw had already been taken by the time I found it lol.

Roverland still has some in stock I think. The coolest part was that I got the fairing with it - which is close to $300, if you think about it I got the rack for $350 and the fairing for $300  or at least thats how I justify it lol

That makes perfect sense `). That fairing would be nice as the rack howls at highway speeds, but I plan on putting 4 hella FF100s on it and I dont think you can use it if you've got lights. I just got mine for $300, cost me $140 for shipping, $40 to have the mounts retapped as the bolts were stuck in them and the po had to cut the heads off, and $5 for new hardware at lowes. If I would have driven over to Roverland to pick it up it would have been $695 + tax. The rack paid for itself this weekend, it was so nice to be able to throw my spare tire, firewood, garbage, and muddy tow straps on it instead of inside the vehicle. Here's mine, its gotta come off this week as I'm repainting the roof.

I picked up a rack a couple of weeks ago on ebay Germany. I stumbled across an auction where the seller had listed the item as 'Roof rack - poss for Range Rover' and added this pic:

There was only one other bidder and, as I wasn't completely sure it was a RR expedition rack, I only bid up to €100 for it. Ended up getting it for €50 8)
Turns out it really is the expedition rack and in fine shape w/all hardware.

It's not for the P38, tho, it's for our MKIII. Darrin Turner spoiled my opportunity to gloat in the MKIII forum by posting that a buddy was selling his expedition rack for $100, so when I saw this thread, I thought I'd take the opportunity to gloat here...

Hi Steve,

Nice found.
Do not forget that it can be mounted to your P38 and be ready for your next rangie ;) ?

Cheers

Hi Flo,

are the mountings in the same place on a mk3 rack as a p38 one then? Will they just slot onto the roof channels without modification?

If so this is good news as you see more mk3 racks around than p38 ones.

Nope. The LM is bigger than the P38. I just measured a couple of days ago - so theoretically I should be able to tell you how much they're off - unfortunately I suffer from CRS. If I remember correctly, the distance from the front to middle mount was roughly the same but middle to rear is like 10cm more on the LM. And the LM is considerably wider.

I assume Flo had new mounts welded on to the LM rack - not a bad thing. If the racks are much less expensive and more plentiful it might be worth looking into. Flo had a thread - search under his UN.

Thanks Flo. This one will stay strictly for the LM - I welded one up for the P38. It has our roof top tents on it.
