if you buy a good quality BEHR unit you should not have too much to worry about ,
installing an oversized part might work but why?

Why not? More fins and massive heat sink. That’s an improvement. Heat is the killer of electronics.

I’m going to disassemble the dash anyway so I will see if it is at all possible to enlarge the hole. So far nobody has done it yet.

How can you be sure that the BMW FSR will control fan speed correctly? Larger heat sinks is directly related to more heat which can mean that there's more resistance. Current is inversely related to resistance.

It may work correctly, but I wouldn't bet on it.
