Hi,

Let's see the result of hours of work. Now i quite understand why there's not any P38A snorkel on the market.
Take an impossible internal routing, add a clam shell type hood and you've one of the most difficult configuration to start with.

I like it. What about you?

i like the lower half but is there any way to raise the top intake part higher and reduce the size of the liberty bell at the top? you planning on swimming it or just looking for pristine air intake?

This snorkel suits a 200TDI Defender. Got it for free because incomplete delivery to a friend's shop.
I hesitated a long time for a Patrol GU adaptation like in Australia but free snorkel is always better.
I went with this for another excellent reason. The Mantec lower part place is much lower than the Patrol GU mod. That way if i decide to take that thing off for any reason, i'm ready to put Range Rover Sport Side Grilles and voila no more hole in the fender
Mantec isn't very good looking but it's heavy duty, not like Safari knock off from fleabay.

Internal routing pics are coming but it's as for any snorkel along the fender.
The main difficulty is to shape the arch liner in order to accept a 70mm tubing instead of 45mm maximum. What a pita job to do with a heat gun.

You're allright about the snorkel head. Looks good on a defender but not on it.
Ordered a Safari. We'll see of it goes.

Took the rangie for a ride to Fontainebleau last evening. Now that thing breaths well and people do not look at the rangie as a BMW X5 or such SUV 8) (it started with the roof rack even without the spare on it).

I must tell you that i took off a OEM restriction plate right after the OEM airbox near the fender. That silly thing was reducing from 80mm to 45mm the air intake.
I think this upgrade of the restriction plate could benefit to all, even without any snorkel mod.

I waterproofed all the way around so it's pretty ready for a swim. But, i only go to water if there's no other solution.

996,
would you please elaborate on the removal of the oem restrictor for the air intake? and would anyone else please throw out any thories about why i shouldn't try this if he does elaborate? will this work well to the extent that it over-taxes the filter with dust and crud more quickly?

Hi,

Here is the almost finish snorkel (need to apply a paint product to keep the Mantec finish).
I had a second incomplete Mantec kit of a Defender 300 TDI so i joined 2 tubes.
I decided to go the modern way : no typical safari head or cyclonic head. Multiples holes in the tube. Enough to not make any restrictions. I'll test it and see if i mount the typical safari head.

I think that suits the rangie better.

A photo of the OEM air intake restrictor screwed to the wheel arch. The white circle is the internal diameter of the air box inlet adapter (plastic thing that goes round to oval). See the restriction. That plate is so badly finished that it looks non OEM. I hope it's not a mod from the LPG installer or such thing.

Internal routing. I do not show the heat gun butcher job on the wheel arch liner because it looks silly.
Hawk eyes will see a special mod that i didn't speak about.

Cheers

Hi Flo,

Very nice job. I have to ask an off topic question though. Is that rack from an L322? I think I remember you saying that you were going to try and fit one but never heard if you did or not.

On topic again, do you think that freeing up the air intake has helped at all in any way? Is there any noticeable improvement? I suppose a better air intake is only help by a free flow exhaust. I ask as I have a free flow exhaust which was put on by a previous owner and if the simple removal of this restriction would help in any way I'm open to the idea.

The only other question I have is, when you are telling us about this restriction, are you talking about one on the snorkel or did you remove the original one that was on the car?

Cheers,

Thanks, it's good to hear it because i must have said 1000 times during the job "i shouldn't do it". I had big worries about cutting the fender and with the right tool it goes well in 10 seconds.

Yes it's the famous L322 roof rack adaptation project. 8) . Bought it from FrogIsland (1st trip in UK for the P38 and not the last one)
My friend Jm from Salon de Provence kindly engineered and fab adapters mounts for it (a production could be done if enough demand).
This is a bit longer than P38 rack but i don't care as i' m already prepared for the next rangie of the family. Dad's TD6 or should i go for V8 in 2-3 years.

I'm not sure that restriction plate which was on the car was factory since my friend doesn't have it on his 96 4.0 with the previous type airbox (ESR341 filter). I wonder why a LPG installer would add that
Anyway, it can only help to trash that stupid thing. Like you i have a free flow exhaust which can benefit of it.

I still need to add some surface in the snorkel head because i can hear it suck air with window down and it's like a race car. Whistles like a Turbo Ricer :)

*if* the air restriction plate was added by the lpg fitter and youre system uses a mixer ring for the lpg it makes sense as mixer
rings require a degree of vacum to function correctly which the filter alone may not provide especially if its a free flow type
adding in the extra intake tract of the snorkel would increase the vacum at the throttle plate without the need for
the plate.

I think I've spotted your mod.
It's a dirty great hinge (just out of shot) to lower the guard so you can open the bonnet, right?
Because otherwise the snorkel is in the way?
Must have been murder making the latch, well done...

Hey Flo,

This is the best intake I have seen on a P38. Since these pics are from a while back, any newer developments? Thanks for the advise on the OEM restriction plate you mentioned. I am going to look for this on my rovers and see if I can find it. Cheers
