I don't see why it wouldn't work, you just have to swap out the guts, as long as the older guts fit inside the new one it should work.

I think the key buttons are the same. See below:

Just be careful which one you get - the first instance of this style of key fob had a delamination problem. There was a TSB for it, see LTB00563NAS1. It calls for RR smart key kit LR052905. The TSB comes with useful instructions.

The 06 to 09 key fobs are only 3 button Fobs, Door lock, Door unlock and rear upper tailgate release. The newer style also has a headlight and flasher button on it that you can't program into the those year trucks. The 2010 and up are also smart keys (ie no actual ignition switch key blade) so again that won't work in the 06 to 09 L322s unless you like opening up the Fob and using the emergency blade every time you want to start the truck.

While I cannot answer the programming questions, I can tell you that I just had a blade cut for an eBay key with no issues. Any competent mobile locksmith can cut the blade based off the current key. Where I am stuck is determining whether I have a 433 or 315 system. Mine is a 2007 but the blade style BMW key doesn't have the Mgtz written anywhere. I think the 2006 systems may have lasted further into the 2007 year model than we knew. Here is what I have Technology Electronic device Finger Hand Gadget

North American 2006's are 315Mhz, Rest of the World RR's are 433 Mhz. Don't know when, or if, the NA trucks FOBs ever shifted over to 433Mhz. The TPMS system did change from 315 to 433 MHz in 2013 I think.
