I just thought I'd let people that I have now fitted a Thor Alloy sump to my GEMS 4.6 Engine.
The people who built my engine did a great job, and sealed my sump up perfectly. But unfortunately I needed to remove it to get the engine out to fix the broken flex plate. It came out a bit mangled and never really sealed properly after that. I had to do an Oil change today so I thought I would have a crack at fitting the later alloy sump, figuring there must have been a reason landrover changed the design. Upon doing some reading an alloy sump has some benefits.
- Reduced NVH
- Reduced External Noise
- Strengthens block
- Better Heat Dissipation
- Improved Oil Sealing and use of a gasket
Well these were supposed to be the benefits, so far I have only noticed a slight decrease in engine noise, and its definitely not leaking YET! Time will tell. I just need to find the inserts that cover up the access hole for the torque converter bolts.
