Had the car for 2 months now with 144k on the clock. Decided to change all the fluids including gearbox.
Bought the cheaper oil by Smith and Allan M1375.4, drained the box and refilled 4ltrs of new oil. This solved many issues with gear change and judder when climbing hills.
A week later I noticed a leak from gearbox sump and as it’s plastic and prone to cracking I replaced it with a metal one from Britpart including new filter and refilled with Smith and Allan oil as before.
Drove car around and absolutely no problems.
The next day when car was cold I started it up, selected reverse no problem, reversed the car and then selected drive. There was no forward movement, the car just rolled back and revved. After 20 seconds I got drive and the car was fine for the rest of the day. Checked oil and OK, No warning messages at all.
Next day same problem, but did a trip to Blackpool (160 miles) no problem at all.
Today, same problem, but this time when selecting drive I get a bong and transmission failure: limited gears on dash. Car crawls in drive and revs up as if clutch slip. I select manual mode to see gearbox is stuck in 4th and won’t change. Turn car off and back on and now I have full selection in manual mode and after a couple of miles switched back to auto and car was fine and did a trip to Manchester and back (60 miles)
So, I’m thinking possibly the cheaper oil has poor performance when gearbox cold (but why work fine before sump pan change) or new filter is poor when gearbox cold.
Could a machine flush with Lifeguard 6 solve this problem?
This is a 2007 TDV8.
Cheers
