HELP! Can't stop driving and spending money on my Range Rover!

Hey guys,

This car is too addicting. Missed my Disco 2 and the old '03 I had so I was in the market for one for a while now. Just bought an '05 a month ago and I've put in about $3000 into it (didn't come with any service records).
So now I think I should create a monthly budget on how much I should spend on my vehicle. I was thinking around $750-1000. Is this too low? What are some things I should get replaced at my KMs?
It's an '05 (BMW engine) with 127k KM/80xxx miles (bought it at 120).

I had a cracked tail light so I'm replacing it with 2012 ones (black inserts). Ordered it on Monday, will be at my doorstep in two days (from the UK).

Here are a few pictures before I did anything to my vehicle. (You can find it in my intro thread)

I spend about $800 in gas a month :)

Either you're showboating or just not making sense at all...

With that kind of a monthly budget, trade it in for an '10+ and have a newer RR and still have warranty left.

Actually, he's spot on... that's what I spent on my 03 over the last 8 months with the same Kms to get it back in good running order:

New rear shocks
New front struts and bags
New Torque converter (warranty)
Tranny flush
Alternator (warranty)
New Radiator
Steering shaft replacement
New battery
Valve cover gaskets
New tires

Will probably do PCV hoses soon and would like to buy a roof rack, brakes will need doing soon too!

Re: HELP! Can't stop driving and spending money on my Range Rover!

So far, I've repaired/replaced:
- Wheel alignment ($150)
- Oil change ($120)
- Replaced badging front + rear ($100 labour) + door handle covers (mine were in a really bad condition) + centre wheel caps + side indicators ($450 for parts)
- Replaced windshield ($100 deductible)
- Headlight ballast ($400) (Bought one for an LR3 by accident for $200 and mine for $200)
- Tail lights ($700 including shipping)
- Bluetooth software upgrade ($150)
- Driveline service ($350)
- Detailing ($300)
- Front window tinting to match factory privacy glass + aquapel ($250)
Doesn't seem like much but it adds up.

+$800/month in gas (including car washes - I wash it every time I go out)

I still have to fix front + rear passenger side seat belts ($640)
Front + Rear Brake Rotors + pads
Winter tyres
Summer tyres + rims
Mud Terrain or All Terrain tyres + rims
Coolant Flush
Brake Fluid Flush

Just got a Low Coolant Level warning (topped it off with coolant and couldn't find a leak so having my fingers crossed).
Will probably replace all the hoses soon.
CV joints have some play
Minor oil leaks.

Also, at the rate that the new ones will depreciate at, I'd rather keep mine. I actually take mine offroading so don't care about scratches at all.

Okay, so you don't mean $750-$1000 per month though?! Unless you expect those to be recurring monthly items, at that point it's becomes non-sense... :)

Yah, I think Novus is spot on. I had replaced the following with my 04

- waterpump & radiator
- front passenger suspension
- Engine bottom end & spark plugs
- fuel pump
- front passenger seat control
- battery

Let's be clear. The $1000/month is your "investment" into the vehicle and not service items. Much of this is upgrading
$300 for a detail, $450 for wheel centers and trim & $250 for tinting.

I would however be careful, at this pace you'll drop $12k into a car that won't be worth $20k by the end of the year.

BTW you do know that the new taillights are not plug and play...right???

No I mean $750-$1000/month for anything. Not just service items. If I don't spend it, i'll put it into a rainy day fund :D.

Compared to my Disco 2, this is a bigger money pit IMO. It's not that it's unreliable, it's the fact that there is an issue and I'd like to get it resolved (ex: leaking coolant)

Same! However, there are too many Range Rovers in this city.

I don't plan on selling this car. I'm planning on driving it to the ground. I know that it's an emotional decision but it was an emotional decision to buy this car in the first place anyway.
I know they're not "plug and play" but they do "plug and play"... sort of. Everything works, it's just the fact that the rear foglight is always on. I bought the 2012 tail lights with the black inserts.
Here's a pic. Sorry for the mess.

Novus, I like your style. My RR is the same but I gave up on fixing paint scratches after the first $1500.

I plan on driving mine 'into' the ground too. Venturesheild or 3m protective film is the way to go if you want to protect the car. No one will wrap all the car panels for you for under $8000. Buy bulk sheet, clean the car, cut it with a hobby knife and apply it. No more scratches and cleaning it becomes easy. 1-2 day job.

I gave up on detailing it because of off road use. I do it myself and put $$ in the rainy day fund.

Nice! Great job on the tail lamps, looks great!

Wow, does James own a gas station or connected somehow to Exxon/Mobil? LOL With that lineup of cars, I can only imagine his monthly gas expense.

Actually, a friend of mine who happens to be an Arabian Prince, runs a oil pipeline beneath my home, suffice to say, I don't go far to fill up, ahahhaha.
However, in reality, I own a 2.5L turbo Volvo XC70 as well, so all the tiny runs are done on that, and when I feel like really "enjoying life", my dad or I will pull out one of the beasts.
