Heated Steering Wheel - Smoking!

3442 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  itguy
I had the heated steering wheel on today, as I do every morning at this time of year and only one section got hot but I didnt really notice. Then I noticed a smell, then I saw smoke and bubbling coming from a small section of the wheel!

I immediately turned it off, I'll have to order a new one (eBay £150) but how dangerous is that!? What if it had caught fire or something.

I've noticed mine has a couple of hot patches now in the old days it used to be fairly even - might be trouble ahead!!!

I had looked at updating the wheel anyway as the leathers quite worn now.
I had the same thing about 6 weeks ago on my 2003. Turned it on one morning and it felt like I had stabbed myself on a sharp pin in the steering wheel - took a look and just where you put your right hand there was a tiny pin hole burnt through with bubbling plastic and a trail of smoke…

I went for one of those £150 new wheels (exchange) from ebay as well - the one with the new silver 'spokes' - looks very nice and the soft leather feels very good on a cold day.

What did you search for on EBay - cannot find a New Silver Spokes version???

That's it, exactly the same, I thought I was just being over sensitive to the heat and moved my hand to start with! I wonder if this will be covered under a safety recall in the future. Risk of personal injury I would say!
This is the one I got : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0078796931

The seller was Powerful_uk_ltd - they also have a website. The wheels come up every couple of weeks, I just took a look and don't see any now, but when I was looking they hade a handful they listed every couple of weeks. Easy to install as well. I was worried about the silver as I am not a RR Chrome person, but this looks very very nice in the car as most of the silver is covered by the wheel controls - matches the surrounds on the air vents well.

I like it very nice indeed - good buy. :thumb:
A section of my steering wheel got really hot the other day without even being on. So I guess I should pay attention to this and find a replacement.
Wait till the seats start to go...!!! hot pants!
Don't joke! I had a Volvo 850 T5 and there were plenty which caught fire - there was a Volvo recall on it and I had it done on mine at 13 years old!!
