Hi all,
This my review of the HawkEye Diagnostic tool built by Bearmach/Omnitec.
I bought this unit about 2 weeks back direct from Bearmach. The people there was friendly and email communications was a breeze on working hours. Usually got a reply from them within half an hours time. Got the device within a few working days shipped to my location via TNT.
Onto the device itself now. The device is compact and easy to handle and is very lightweight. I think it weighs somewhere around 100-200g which is almost the wight of a hand-phone. The build quality is very good. There are no loose ends, no rattling sounds, feels solid but not solid enough because of its lightweight. The keypad with 6 keys are the standards with many hand held tools i guess and its quite solid and easily replaceable (i guess) if something goes wrong. The display is large and easy to read and has ample of space, which unfortunately haven't been used to it's max. There are about 2 lines on the top which could have been utilized.
The cable that came with the device is very strong and durable. It would definitely last a long time and feels like it's been designed for rough use. The length is also sufficient for handling it from any of the seats inside the vehicle.
I bought this unit for my P38 DSE, so i had the device unlocked for P38's (which is included free). For the moment i.e s/w ver 2.0.x can only access the following ECU's
You can read almost all fault codes stored on these and have a description of what the fault is. You can clear the faults. Also live data reading such as engine temp, rpm, boost pressure, injection quantity, crank angle, atmos pressure, wheel speeds, opened/closed valves of abs etc.
One of the best things that i like about this device is you can perform some circuit tests. For eg. engage the ac clutch, check some of the lights in the instrument panel, check your abs system individual parts etc. These tests modules are customized for LR's i.e with a generic scan tool you cannot perform these tasks.
I didn't buy the AirSus cable to connect with the unit so i cannot say how the airsus part is working. Also there are no petrol P38's in my country (heck i don't think there are more than 5-10 P38's here in SL) so I'm unable to test that part either.
Overall, this is a great unit to have in your vehicle specially thinking of value for money and about the creators. Also it's great because you can use this on other vehicles as this it not locked to a single VIN.
I was disappointed in the beginning as i wanted to see what's going on my HEVAC ECU, and finding that this unit doesn't have that functionality yet. But they're about to release a firmware/software upgrade for these devices on January and i hope it would include more ECU's specially the troublesome ones as the AC ECU. (The upgrade is free as they say)
I'll post the whole set up functions i am able to access in my next post. I don't have the device now to list them down.
Hope you all enjoyed reading this review as much as i enjoyed writing it. If you have anything to ask fire it up here.
Bye for now.
