Hi all,

This my review of the HawkEye Diagnostic tool built by Bearmach/Omnitec.

I bought this unit about 2 weeks back direct from Bearmach. The people there was friendly and email communications was a breeze on working hours. Usually got a reply from them within half an hours time. Got the device within a few working days shipped to my location via TNT.

Onto the device itself now. The device is compact and easy to handle and is very lightweight. I think it weighs somewhere around 100-200g which is almost the wight of a hand-phone. The build quality is very good. There are no loose ends, no rattling sounds, feels solid but not solid enough because of its lightweight. The keypad with 6 keys are the standards with many hand held tools i guess and its quite solid and easily replaceable (i guess) if something goes wrong. The display is large and easy to read and has ample of space, which unfortunately haven't been used to it's max. There are about 2 lines on the top which could have been utilized.

The cable that came with the device is very strong and durable. It would definitely last a long time and feels like it's been designed for rough use. The length is also sufficient for handling it from any of the seats inside the vehicle.

I bought this unit for my P38 DSE, so i had the device unlocked for P38's (which is included free). For the moment i.e s/w ver 2.0.x can only access the following ECU's
  • Engine Management ECU's - GEMS/Bosch Petrol + Diesel EDC[/*:m:2m0l2fmg]
  • ABS ECU - WABCO C/D[/*:m:2m0l2fmg]
  • Air Suspension ECU[/*:m:2m0l2fmg]

You can read almost all fault codes stored on these and have a description of what the fault is. You can clear the faults. Also live data reading such as engine temp, rpm, boost pressure, injection quantity, crank angle, atmos pressure, wheel speeds, opened/closed valves of abs etc.
One of the best things that i like about this device is you can perform some circuit tests. For eg. engage the ac clutch, check some of the lights in the instrument panel, check your abs system individual parts etc. These tests modules are customized for LR's i.e with a generic scan tool you cannot perform these tasks.

I didn't buy the AirSus cable to connect with the unit so i cannot say how the airsus part is working. Also there are no petrol P38's in my country (heck i don't think there are more than 5-10 P38's here in SL) so I'm unable to test that part either.

Overall, this is a great unit to have in your vehicle specially thinking of value for money and about the creators. Also it's great because you can use this on other vehicles as this it not locked to a single VIN.

I was disappointed in the beginning as i wanted to see what's going on my HEVAC ECU, and finding that this unit doesn't have that functionality yet. But they're about to release a firmware/software upgrade for these devices on January and i hope it would include more ECU's specially the troublesome ones as the AC ECU. (The upgrade is free as they say)

I'll post the whole set up functions i am able to access in my next post. I don't have the device now to list them down.

Hope you all enjoyed reading this review as much as i enjoyed writing it. If you have anything to ask fire it up here.

Bye for now.

Well actually this update will bring this unit to almost at par with dealer spec. Cos this update comes mainly designed for the omnitec UCM whic is basically the same product. If you're not in a hurry buy anything then wait till Jan release of the s/w update and i will post a review after that. Also please do await the full product details i'll be posting in afew hours.

Hiya Gunemalli.
Thanks for the review.
i have to agree with Rick that it does sound quite disappointing so far in that it only covers 2 out of the total of 8 ECU's with built in self diagnostic capability in your car, the engine management which is OBDII compliant, and the ABS.
I agree completely. I was a bit disappointed seeing what was able to achieve with this unit. As i said in my post the main reason i went for this is to get to my AC ECU & the price, but had to find it out the hard way. :(

BBS SPY said:
And granted they have promised you an update in January, but your comment
i hope it would include more ECU's specially the troublesome ones as the AC ECU
does not sound like they have given you any firm promises.
I hope it does turn out well for you some time in january. :thumb:
Well actually the guys at bearmach have no clue to what's going on with these units. On the email i received when inquiring about this, Clive the rep at Bearmach told me that they still didn't know the specifics from Omnitec devs. So basically i could see is that Bearmach is acting more like the distributing end of the device and omnitec people are the guys behind the developments.

I really am looking forward to your more detailed listing of the exact settings possible, which are readable and which are writable, live data values that can be monitored, what output controls you have, and what other features the unit can do.
I posted the details above. For me all are only readable. Only writable option is the AirSus part which the cable i haven't bought.

BBS SPY said:
perhaps also you can explain what help is given on each item to know what it does and means etc.
Well there is a little description on what the fault is like, Fault 25 -> Anti Theft System or Fault XXX -> Unable to communicate with ABS ECU etc. There is also a built in OBD II faultcode decoder i guess, which i haven't used, and i haven't listed these up on the features list. Will do it tomorrow.

BBS SPY said:
I am also a bit confused as to this statement.
I didn't buy the AirSus cable to connect with the unit
It's surely the same OBDII lead isn't it? It is on ours, whole car covered by one OBDII lead.
perhaps you can clarify that and also tell us the cost of this lead.
Yes it's the same OBDII connector. To access certain functions on differing models some additional items must be purchased. For eg. on P38's, if you want to access the EAS, you need to buy another cable. To access the Security System (N/A for P38's) you need a special adapter. Check their leaflet here to clarify this info. It's a PDF. Has all the details of what it can access.

I was quoted £73 each for the airsus cable and the 14CUX cable and £66 each for adapters( there are 4 adapters).

In a nutshell For P38's out of the mentioned 8 ECU's only 3 are accessible.

So, if my sums are correct, this hawkeye works out more expensive than buying a faultmate.

Ok, it might be open for any P38, but unless you're in the trade there's not much point in it, especially as it only hit's less than half of the fitted modules.

Can you put up any screen shots of it in action?
Ya i guess. I already have shelled out more than 1000+ USD on this device b'cos they printed the item description as 'car parts' and not as electronics. Our customs charge extra on vehicles (more than 320% tax+duty on a 2010 RR SC) & spare parts. If i knew this, i'd definitely would've gone with a Faultmate. Unfortunately it may be too late but we'll see about that.

About the screens, it will have to wait till tomorrow. It's 23:45 at my place. Going to get some shut eye now.

Take Care guys.

Here are some. Will put up some more tonight as the Rangie is out with my dad. I had plug this into my Nissan Micra/March K11 to get the screen shots. Unfortunately it cannot read fault codes :( but it does have the ability to decode the OBDII codes.

As Steve Y says,

Your offer is unbelievable. And i truly appreciate it. I'd love to go with your offer. I am well aware of your products awesome capabilities compared to all other tools. Let me know about your offer details. I will PM you my contact details.

Hiya Gayan.
Don't worry, they have it very much in hand, and our Admin are quite renowned for being spot on.
Yep, you're quite right Colin, They've contacted me in the morning. Replied to the mails.

It's amazing some times how much larger the bigger picture can actually be and i have to say how pleased i am that you have accepted my offer to let me help you see for yourself.

I only hope we can get it all sorted and delivered to you before Christmas.
And thanks for giving your offer too. I think you can get delivered before that. It takes a max of 7 days to get to me from UK/Europe region. I got my HawkEye vis TNT in about 7 days. I won't be able to send you tomorrow as it's a holiday. So it'll be on wednesday.

/offtopic
We're the luckiest in the world if talking about holidays.
12-14 days/yr b'cos of full moon (we call these poya days)(Buddhism related)
a week in april for New Year.
around 5-15 days related to other religions.
so all in all around 1-2 months holidays without taking into account sundays

Hi Everyone,

Well, here's an update on my situation. Sent the HE to Colin, & got the MSV2-Extreme today. got the chance to work with for about an hour. But only was able to do the s/w installation and the initial setup. Will be posting a review later tonight. It looks solid & feels solid.

Waiting for the licensing info from BBS.

Anyways first impression is really great. More detail to follow.

(Heck i should stop all my other stuff and become a critique/reviewer ;) )

Hi all,

Sorry for the delay in writing back. Been busy with several things. One being using the new MSV2.

I'm quite impressed with it's performance and it's capabilities. Quite a monster i must say. And the colors you've put on is a real treat for us meat heads. ;)

Well i was able to read and clear some faults which our beloved stealership forgot to clear. There were a lot of faults recorded in the BeCM as my car was taken apart for painting and the HEVAC ECU too had some faults b'cos of me fiddling with it's systems ;) Cleared all of em and no new faults was logged.

The EDC EMS had logged a new fault with glow plugs being faulty. And my father predicted this even before the MSV arrived ;)

Anyways i'll be writing a detailed review and will post it sometime this week. Still have to start writing it. And i assure you it will be something really interesting to read.

He must be a little confused.

The becm don't log any faults. Bless him.
Hi guys. Thanks for your interest here. Well these faults were read under BeCM->Outstation memory. So that's why i told like that.

I had like 8/10 faults logged like can't comm. With seat memory, outstation memory etc.
