Has anyone retrofit a retail GPS unit to utilize the factory GPS cutout?

I bought a complete set of center console wood trim pieces with all the switches from a 1999 HSE last week for a song. My first thoughts were to fit my Avic f500BT. But, didn't feel like cutting the trim pieces. Since the pieces included the factory GPS mounting frame, I was wondering if someone has dropped in a decent GPS unit in to that slot?
I don't have a problem hacking a GPS unit and rewiring switches if needed as long as the display area can be utilized.

Here are the dimensions:

Using the factory display slot: 4.1" x 3"
With the factory display trim piece removed: 6.9" x 3.8"

My other option would be something like this; unfortunately I don't speak Spanish (I think) to figure out how he relocated the buttons. Also, need to find instructions how to take the AVIC 500 apart; tried taking the Torx screws but couldn't force the casing apart.

This is what I did on mine:

I
'm looking at updating it at some point this year - when the funds permit as I just went for a cheap unit in case I broke it in the installation. However, it's been really robust and works ok... bit slow sometimes - but as I said - it was cheap!!

I proved to myself that it can be done, and next time when I update the system, I'll go for something a bit more expensive - with a bit more speed/power in it.
