My 2003 has thrown a couple of messages on the message center of "Trans fail safe prog". My indy shop says the code is being generated by a transfer case motor fault. Just curious if anyone else has had this? I am about to go on a small road trip and am wondering if i should fix now or when i get back. I have had the message about a dozen times, but not in the last several days after i drove around in sport mode and manual a few times.

If you've only seen it a couple of times i wouldn't worry, last time i saw it, the Air Flow Meter was faulty and caused no end of error message, CEL and poor running. Low battery can be another cause.

If you start seeing it a lot or can't get it to come out of it then worry!

Years of drving my RR has taught me to put little faith in the error messages, normally just turning it off and back on again sorts it.

umbertob - they say the motor needs replacing. I found a refurb one for 1/4 the price of a new one that they said they will install. A few of the times it actually did put me in safe mode where it stays in the same gear and i have to pull over and restart to be able to shift around. It is very strange that i have not seen it lately, though i only drive about 100 miles a week.

I am like you Monty, i try to ignore these things until it is obvious action needs to be taken... the first few times i got the message i blew it off until it actually put me in safe mode then i started freaking. Fortunately the code didn't say it was the tranny. I swear when i took it in to get the code read, while waiting in the waiting room i was freaking out like waiting for the doctor to bring you test results =)

Ok - I have what may be a dumb question, but I have ordered the Transfer Case Shift Motor and in looking this up on my Rave CD it looks simple to replace DIY. Am I looking at the right page? Does anyone know if it is simple?

It is a 20 min job at most, three 10mm bolts on the left side of the car close to the back door. Short extension and ratchet. Remove the connecter by twisting it towards the front of the car. After installing you need to manually calibrate the motor. Quite simple

I got the same message this past winter, maybe 3-4 times, turned the car off and back on to clear each time. Have not seen the message in the last 6 months. I'll wait until it is more consistent before going any further.
