I think you are on the list now, mac. They should PM you for an address when you are next.

Here you go mate....Having spent some time there with the Aust. Army I am still quite fond of the place myself......this resonates with me! :D

"People talk of Sudan as if it is the East. It is not the East. The East has age and colour, the Sudan has no colour and no age. It is just a monotone of squalid barbarism. Nothing grows green, only yellow halfa grass that makes you stumble, and sapless mimosa that tears out your eyes, dom plants that mock with wooden fruit and sodom apples that lure with flatulent poison. It has tarantulas and scorpions and serpents, devouring white ants and every kind of bug that flies and crawls. Its people are naked and dirty, ignorant and besotted. It is a quarter of a continent of sheer squalor. Pverhead the pitiless furnace of the sun, underfoot the never-easing treadmill of the sand, dust in the throat, tuneless singing in the ears, searing flame in the eye. The Sudan is a god accursed wilderness, an empty limbo of torment for ever and ever. Sure enough the Arabs say "When Allah made the Sudan, Allah laughed"......"

"And yet there never was an Englishman who had been to Sudan that was not eager and ready to go again. Perhaps to Englishmen, half savage still ont heir pinnacle of civilization, the very charm of the land lies in the empty barbarism. There is space in the Sudan, there is the fine purified desert air and the long gallops over its sand. There are things at the very back of life and no other to posture in front of them: hunger and thirst to assuage, distance to win through, pain to bear, life to defend and death to face. You are in the Sudan unprejudiced, simple and free. You are a naked man facing naked Nature."

Glad to see the book is still actively making it's way around - hope everyone has been enjoying it.

Haven't been spending much time on the forum these days because - dare I say it - I haven't had any issues recently... OK, I'm sure something is falling off as I type this!

Just kidding - I was just talking about it with my wife a few days ago - we bought a new Volvo a number of years ago because we expected to have years of trouble-free motoring. It has been nothing like that - every year at least one fairly significant thing needs replacement, and usually needs to be done by a real mechanic (at least I have non-dealer Volvo sprecialists around here or I'd be broke). On the other hand, the RRC we bought against friend and family advice (as an "unreliable British car") has never let us down and is easy to work on when I have something to do. Unfortunately the 'rust worm' will probably take it off the road before if suffers mechanical failure - right now about 1,000 miles away from turning over 200K...
