Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light... I've bought a Range Rover Sport 2.7 TDV6 about a month ago and a few days ago I started having an issue with the car. Basically, while I was driving the doors unlocked and the interior lights came on. At the same time the hazard lights came on (couldn't hear the hazard clicking or flashing on the dash) I only noticed because other drivers started telling me that i've got my hazards on. I pulled over to switch the car off in the hope that it will start working again after powering it on but it wouldn't start up again or try to turn over. I got the following error message on the dash:
  • Suspension Fault Vehicle Lean When Cornering
  • Parkbreak Fault
After 15 minutes it started up but did the same thing again a few minutes later.

The car drives fine and doesn't lose any power.

I've taken the car to Land Rover specialist but even they're struggling to find out what it is.

So far they've told me that the car goes into a 'Crash Mode' because it thinks it's had an accident. They're not sure what's the cause but they've spent 3 hours trying to find out without any success. They believe that there's a loose connection somewhere. The battery has recently been replaced by Land Rover. They've checked all fuses and looked for trace of water on the electrics.

Thanks in advance.

Your CAN bus is dropping out, both High Speed and Medium Sped can cause this issue.

They're right about the crash mode, but not so much about it thinking its had an accident. The way it works on this model is that there is constantly a 'no crash' signal that is broadcast on the network, and when that signal is lost(bus goes down) every system reacts to it.

There are several different common failure points, but somewhat difficult to pinpoint without looking at the vehicle, or knowing even what year(also, any advice I may be able to give is based only on US spec vehicles, so a fair amount of it might not apply to you) Hopefully the shop has decent diagnostic equipment, a full list of faults, from every module would be great, but knowing if they can communicate with a few different modules is a starting point, specifically the Instrument Pack, Central Junction Box(Body Control Unit) the HVAC unit, the Transfer Case Control Module, and the Parking Brake Module.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your reply.

The dealership has logged a call with Land Rover Technical Team and are now awaiting their response.

They've told me that they're getting loads of different error messages when they plug it in their diagnostic machine but there's two main faults that they think it might be - the Instrument Pack and Air Bag module but their not 100% sure.

My Range Rover Sport is a 2006 model.

Can a loose connection underneath the passenger seat cause CAN BUS issues? I'm only asking because the day I started getting this issue I noticed a cable with loads of wires going through it underneath the passenger seat looked loose so I gently tucked it back underneath so that no one can step on it. Can any of these wires case CAN BUS issues?

Also, what's the Instrument Pack?

Thanks again.

Instrument pack or IP is the dash cluster (speedo, tach gauges etc) Im having an issue with mine also, I believe mine is the instrument pack, mainly happens when it sits in the sun too long, anyway my dash goes wild and starts flashing all of the warning lights and it will not start. I can press the odometer button and it will clear everything except the check engine light and it will crank right up. Sometimes the lights will just start flashing while driving down the road, it will throw the car into limp home mode and the transmission will only go into 3rd gear. I can pull over turn it off press the odo button (yes I said press the Odometer button on the IP)and all is well again for a while. I still have not purchased a new instrument pack because the dealer is wanting to charge me for a ton of labor to remove and install the IP not to mention the god awful price for the IP.Anyway I can remove the IP in about 20 min. but I don't have the test book to marry the IP to the truck. Anyway like dave said it could be several things most likely the IP or the transfer case control module has water ingress. That module is on the firewall behind the battery, Its fairly common for this to fail also.

I think it's the battery in both cases.

NOT the battery, two new batteries were installed, 950 cc amps no dice, the IPs and TC modules are known to fail, mine is the IP.

Just an update on mine. I finally got off of my lazy butt and removed the instrument panel/cluster from the RRS because my wife continues to have problems with the car not starting hazard and dash lights flashing, transmission going into fail safe mode etc etc. It never happens at night or when it is cool only in the afternoon when the truck has been sitting in the sun. It can be cleared by pressing the odometer but it reoccurs every 5 min or so until the interior cools off. So last weekend I pulled the IP, It takes about 20-30 min. Its not hard at all. There is one conection in the back of the cluster, I unplugged it put a little permetex dielectric grease on the connection and plugged it back in, then reinstalled the plug. It has been a week and the problem has not reoccurred (fingers crossed) Anyway I think its just a little corrosion or it was not connected very good from the factory. Anyway all has been good because the wife is happy happy happy. And that makes me smile.

I bought a RR sport 2 month ago and it is doing excactly the same as the original posters car, its been in several "Land Rover" places so getting a little fed up with it now, this time they are replacing the intrument pack. i tracked down the original owner of the car and he told me he had problems with it doing the same thing a couple of years ago as the Body control unit got wet, and Land Rover dried it out and said if it goes again it will need changing. Strangely though it does happen more when the heater is on, as the heater controls start to pulse , then the doors unlock, interior light , hazards startto flash (although you cant tell from inside the vehicle) then the sat nav shuts down with system error it will keep running but it you switch it off it wont start for 20mins... Will see what it comes back like this time ,if it ain't right then i think unfortunately my brief love affair with RR's will come to an end as it will be going back to the delers and getting my money back for certain, i have only driven it 5 times and done 80 mile in it since i bought it 2 month ago

Realistically, having your vehicle towed to my shop will not make financial sense, and I do not have the physical space to store a vehicle for any amount of time.

That said, I am happy to help any way I can on here. So, lets go through this again, and maybe start a new thread...

Are the throttle codes still present? What exactly is wrong with it, not starting? stalling? hazards and door locks actuating?
