How does the CPO warranty work if there are no service records?

Looking to buy a 2016 RRS V8SC with 60k miles. Carfax shows 3 owners and absolutely ZERO service records.

The second owner bought it CPO, owned it 9 months, then the third guy owns it 5 months. Carfax shows no service records. I thought in order to sell CPO it had to have service records.

I'm looking to be owner #4, but only if the warranty will be valid. LLNA said that it's valid till 10/2022, but I need to know if it'll cover issues, seeing there's no service history.

Am I an idiot for trying to be the 4th owner of a used RRS with 500HP?

Waffle,

I would not say that you are an idiot, but I would be really skeptical about this rig. 3 owners in less than three years and no records of any service suggest that there is probably more than meets the eye. I would keep on searching.

Best of luck.

Waffles, you are confused about what what must be reported in a Carfax. Nothing must be reported to Carfax. Carfax does it's own research through public records. Police reports of accidents are transferred into a database for statistical research by the NTSB, Insurances and anyone else that have use for it.

All licensing transactions and title changes go through each states department of licencing data bases. Insurance companies report totaled vehicles to licensing departments so the titles can be tagged as such. If a totaled car is purchased back by the owner, the title is marked "salvage." If a car is sent to scrap the company recycling the vehicle must obtain the title and file a notice of destruction. Parts yards must file with licensing.

A Carfax report is only as good as the info available in public records. If a car is in an accident and no police report is filed and repairs are handled by the owner... there is nothing for Carfax to find.

To be blunt, service has nothing to do with whatever third party warranty is used to CPO a vehicle. There are service records for this rig...with whomever did the services and charged the owners.

That may be true, but out of the hundreds of carfax reports reviewed in last 6 months, I don't recall a single LR/RR without service entries.

I'd love an answer from an experienced individual regarding the CPO warranty. And how strict the policy is regarding service records.

I mean say I purchase the car and the engine blows. Will I have to hire Sherlock Holmes to trace down service records, from a cash only shop, or will LRNA do that? I'm really looking for some deep insight in this realm.

I am looking for a 16 or 17 SVR. And I have come across a few with NO service history records on the CARFAX. One vehicle was at a Land Rover dealership with NO records on the CARFAX. But they did have the records at the dealership for this vehicle. Like RRToadHall, everything is not reported on a CARFAX or other reports.

The vehicle has had three owners is less than 3 years and service history is unknown. I'd stay far away from it - find another similarly spec'd one.

I had a guy drive out to scan the vehicle. No dash light, but here's the report. He said it's in good shape and no other concerns.

What do you guys think about all the communication codes? The PCM codes are kind of alarming.

Last year I bought a 2014 cpo f-type. Engine blows up and warranty denies repair until I can provide the service records. I’m like wtf? It’s cpo and how would I have the service records if I wasn’t the owner? Service Advisor was telling me it’s a $48k repair and warranty company doesn’t want to flip the bill. To make a long story short the finally cover it once I show proof of oil changes at proper intervals. What a cluster duck

Thank you so much for the insight. This is exactly what I was looking for. The car I'm looking at was sold CPO at 40k miles. No service records before nor after (from the owner or carfax). I guess if I bought it at 60k miles and started an oil change cadence, maybe just maybe I'd get lucky if major issues arose.

Anyway, after 2 weeks, $200 inspection, and $10k drop in asking; I passed. I do not deny that it could've been a winner though. I love me a good deal.

I bought a2014 RRS SC Dynamic CPO, no service records on the Carfax, but lots of them through the dealer. The dealer (actually from Louisiana) does not use Carfax, but the Land Rover system.

Ask the dealer for the service records, they have them if it is CPO.

I didn't have that many codes when my battery died/low on my 06 Jag. And that was with the "Christmas tree" dash light show. If you have ever seen it, it flashes every light in the dash and freaks out every canbus on the car.
Gut feeling about this RRS........Run!

Just want to comment on all of the above faults.. I have a 2019 f pace and a 2019 rrs the f pace is currently in the shop for 24 faults I did the scan and a bunch of the can bus failures above as well as the multiple modules with invalid info also show up on the f pace it only has 1800 miles on it.
my Range Rover has 8 of the various can bus codes as shown above, one was permanent and the others were intermittent and it only has 187 miles on it.

It is very strange that a bunch of JLR vehicles are having these codes not sure if they are serious or not but i do know that we all are having to bring our trucks in to fix glitches and i dont believe it is only due to the software versions. I would bet that if everyone would have their vehicles scanned even if they are not having symptoms many of the above vaults would show up.

With that said I would have passed on it as well better safe than sorry. I would suggest in the future as whomever scans the vehicle to let you know if they are intermittent, permanent or historic faults they can also tell when the faults happened at what mileage.

Out of curiosity did you call your local dealer with the VIN and ask if it was showing as covered under warranty? If so did you not believe them? That's about as far as I would have gone so just wondering. If the dealer said it shows as under warranty in their system I wouldn't have thought twice!

I did not contact any dealers. I sent the VIN directly to Land Rover NA. They said that the vehicle indeed had the transferable CPO warranty until 10/2020.

If this is where you would've pulled the trigger without further investigation, then you sir are more of a gambling man than I, or you just have more money, because here is the part that will surely come into question when the time comes...

The Land Rover Approved Certified Limited Warranty covers vehicles for up to seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, as long as the vehicle is serviced as recommended by Land Rover.
I then replied to LRNA asking about the importance of service records in case of warranty work.

Direct reply...
Thank you for your response. The warranty could be effected if there is an issue with the vehicle, and it is determined the issue is caused by improper maintenance. This is a risk a consumer takes when not purchasing a CPO from an authorized retailer. Documentation of maintenance is very important as proper maintenance will keep a vehicle performing as intended.
I dunno. Could be hit or miss.
