As this is a worldwide forum it would be interesting hear views on the "Correct" Engine Oil viscosity for various Countries/States.

Engine Oil Temperature Ranges (Only LR WSS-M2C913-B from handbook)

5W/30 will protect from -30°C to 35°C (-22°F to 95°F)

5W/40 will protect from -30°C to 50°C (-22°F to 122°F)

10W/30 will protect from -10°C to 35°C (-14°F to 95°F)

10W/40 will protect from -10°C to 50°C (-14°F to 122°F)

I am in the south of the UK and am interested in which of above I should use, I guess 10W/30 but not certain?

Also which Brand and whether Synthetic, Mineral or Mixture?

I ask as I have just taken the TDV8 in for an Inspection2 service at local Specialist (used to be main dealer) and I have no idea what they are putting in...

On the clackety M62 engine I use 5W30 in winter and 10w40 in summer.

The thin winter oil keeps the noise down on cold startups and the thicker summer oil minimises cat damage from potential oil burning.

So you Engine service twice a year? (Expensive)

Expensive - that's relative. Also I dont consider an oil change to be a "Service"

The BMW OEM oil (Fuchs SuperSyn) is £16.00 per 5L and a filter is £10. I "Usually" do the change myself, but its been so cold lately I got a mobile mechanic to do it for £20 labour. So total oil change cost is £60, if I do it myself in the summer, my years worth of oil changes will come to £100 - I don't consider that to be expensive.

When I do the winter oil change I replace the air filter and pollen filter to get rid of all the bugs and leaves injested.

Peter at Harris Maye Country Cars has been in the Land Rover business for 40 years and used to be a main dealer before falling out and becoming an Independent Specialist Land Rover Service Garage.

He recommends Revolution Oil for its excellent protective values for modern Ford Petrol & Diesel Engines and is great value:

Revolution Oil
5w/30 Semi Synthetic (recommended for zetec engines)
Semi-synthetic, fuel-efficient multi grade engine oil meeting the latest API classifications. Engine design has changed rapidly over recent years. Increased output from smaller units coupled with reduced engine oil sump capacity has demanded more from the lubricant. Many engine manufactures are using semi-synthetic formulations as their initial fill. Revolution 5W/30 semi synthetic is manufactured from a balanced blend of top quality mineral and synthetic base stocks, producing high quality engine oil with the properties of semi-synthetic technology.
Its naturally higher lubricity offers lower internal friction for reduced engine wear. Its low viscosity offers improved flow rates and hydraulic tappet performance during cold start and engine idling, a problem with many higher viscosity oils. Revolution 5W/30 semi synthetic offers excellent stay in grade performance for today’s modern multi-valve engines. Revolution 5W/30 semi synthetic is suitable for normally aspirated and turbocharged, petrol and diesel vehicles particularly modern vehicles. It meets many of the latest Ford requirements. It is miscible with all synthetic and mineral based engine oils.
Main Specifications
API SL/SJ/CF
ACEA A1,B1
Ford WSS M2C 913-B
BMW LL-FE-01
Opel Pass
ILSAC GF-2

Its apparently designed for the most Modern Ford Engines as has the Ford WSS M2C 913-B specification .....

Funny because Peter said "Fully Synthetic" on the phone but when I looked it up I could only find the Semi-Synthetic listing above???

Don't bother with semi-synthetic at all.
To gain the spec 'semi' there only has to be a minimum of 5% synth. mix.
It would be like swapping from synthetic to mineral.

Its a 5W/30 FULLY SYNTHETIC Oil made to very highest specification available including Diesel Low Sats requirements for Diesel Filters.

Phew....

I just paid £52.87 for 7.5l of Revolution Oils 5w/30 Fully Synthetic "New Generation MB, BMW Longlife, ACEA C3, API SM" as part of my 3 year Inspection 2 service. (That's £35.24 for 5l)

According to Harris Mayes Country Cars who have 50 years Land Rover service experience its a better "higher tech" oil than the equivalent Castrol/Mobil etc...

Diesel C3 Low Saps 5w/30 Fully Synthetic
Low Saps is particularly formulated to meet the performance demands and requirements of the most up to date BMW Longlife-04 specification and Daimler Chrysler MB 229.31 which encompass high standards of emission control under all conditions including vigorous high speed styles of driving. Low Saps is a new generation fully synthetic super multigrade engine oil formulated using the latest developments in synthetic technology together with the most up to date advancements in additive chemistry setting new standards in engine oil performance.
Low Saps has been developed to enable outstanding performance to be provided along with effective emission control and full compatibility with emission control after treatment systems. Low SAPS (sulphated ash phosphorus and sulphur) additive technology ensure optimum performance of emission control equipment including particulate filters, at the same time providing long term emission system protection, ensuring a high level of continuous pollution control thereby minimising environmental damage.
Main Specifications
API SM
ACEA A3/B4-04, C3-04, A3/B4-02

Ha Ha should have gone to Spec Savers

As per above, they are chronically over priced though. It's not just the FUCHS that is less than half the price elsewhere.
