I have the late st Autobiography and have found that the USB will charge my Nano but wont play it and the iPod connection will play it and not charge it so i'm constantly switching between the two - ridiculous!

Is it the cable, the nano or the car?

It's the car - and the changes Apple made to its newer devices (they were "newer" back when the electronic interface for the MY2010s was engineered by JLR, anyway)... Charging of 4th gen iPod Nano, 2nd gen iPod Touch and iPhone 3G/3GS is not supported through the iPod port in early 2010 Land Rovers, including RR, RRS and LR4 (more recent builds may have addressed the issue, not sure.) You need to purchase a $20 Scosche Passport charging adapter like this one, and your iPod Nano should then charge through the car's iPod port.
