The car does not lock on its own. You either need to use the remote or the button on the door handle (if you have hepatic sensors, i think its call passive entry) it only recognizes the key when you are standing at the door and allows you to enter. If you have the owners manual i would definitely read it. (I know guys dont read instructions) as for locking you can also use the button on the door. Mirrors folded in means it is locked.
