Can I swap a '99 Lucas engine into '00 Range Rover?

Hey guys,

I wrote on a previous post about my '99 4.0s that got into an accident, and the parts to fix it even from a junkyard are going to be over $1000. I happened upon another '00 RR that has around 280,000 miles on it, and is selling for cheap. Is it possible to swap my motor (only 88,000 miles) into the car if I buy it? Mine is the early '99 rover that used the Lucas EFI setup. Thanks.

Yes, with reservations.

You'd need to fit the whole intake system from the other car to your engine, the timing case (the oil pressure switch is different and has a different thread), and modify the mounting for the crank angle sensor. I'm not exactly sure what the differences are in the crank angle sensor mounting but I think you'd have to weld something to the older block.

I'm not sure what other mods would need to be done.

I have a feeling the camshaft sensor is different so you might need to change the camshaft sprocket, too.
In theory yes, the practicalities may be a bit different however:
a compete engine and transmission swap should be OK.
However: :hand:
the BECM probably needs to be swapped as well ... and also the instrument cluster because of the mileage AND the door locks...
The later model has a slightly upgraded Wabco brake modulator. Don't know if this affects the ABS because of the 2 vs 4 wheel traction control
I'm speculating here but the auto trans ECU might also need to be swapped over as well depending on the whether the trans. is the HP22 or HP24 type.....

that's a small list for starters...now I'd better stop procrastinating and finish my income tax return due next week

No, swapping the complete engine would mean swapping engine management system, too - and wiring loom, etc, air intake, maybe accelerator linkages, and who knows what else. I think the only item swappable is a short engine, i.e., block and heads (with mods to the block).

I don't think it's a viable option for most people.
Yep you're correct Ron, guess I interpreted the question re "swapping the motor" meaning the whole lot.
Swapping over just the short motor makes a lot more sense :thumb:
I had a look at just the opposite. I got offered a good deal on a Bosch motor for my Gems Rangie. I found it there is a lot more than meets the eye from a few reliable sources. Nothing that cant be done by anyone with an adequate shop, but more hassle than what I wanted to deal with. I found a good used motor for $500 for me to rebuilt, complete with intake, injectors and accessories etc. Peterbrit has the motor, you may want to give him a shout and see what he will sell it for if you are interested.
BTW< How much was the rig with the high miles on it??

Danny, have you tried talking to Dennis yet about the Rangi he has, as suggested on the other post?

Scotty
There is no problem in swapping between Gems and Bosch engines - I've done it.The mounting for the crank sensor is the same but the cam sprocket will need changing along with the sump etc.I cant remember about the oil pickup tho.
If you get the motor back to what you would buy as a stripped engine its really easy,as you shouldnt need to buy anything - except perhaps a cam chain/sprocket set as good housekeeping.
Aren't there some laws somewhere about putting an older engine into a newer car?

Only in Communist states like Kalifornia. I know in Mo there is no such rules etc.
If you keep the emissions of whichever is the newer, he will be fine IMHO. Than and who is going to tell them? :thumb:
