Just took my 04 in for an oil change.

the dealer pointed out that the last dealer must have broken the little plastic pipe that the oil filter slides over inside the oil filter housing as it is now broken.

they can't find a used one and apparently that part is not sold separate from the oil filter housing.

Question.....

can the piece of plastic still be inserted and just sit in there broken? If it was broken on the last oil change it didn't cause any other problems so far?

i really don't want to throw $600 at the job if I don't have to.

any comments?

any one know if and where just the centre plastic piece can be purchased?

thanks in advance!

Don't think they can be that whole thing except for the cap is one piece. Its a BMW part number 11427511169 and directly from BMW its "only" 259 bucks.

Can you post a picture of the broken part? Maybe someone has a spare lying around and can mail it to you. I may have one as most used engines come with the entire housing, but it could be a while until I could mail it out.

Mark C is correct - it is a BMW part (double check just in case) and "Vehicle Fitment: BMW: 540i 1997-03 | 750iL 1992-94 | 840Ci 1994-97 | 850Ci 1993-97 | 850CSi 1994-95 | 850i 1991-92 | M5 2000-03 | X5 2000-03 | Z8 2000-02." So you have many options.
