hi folks,

I have a few items I am being quoted for following some investigation from an independant specialist.
I was a little surprised at how much some of things were in the quote.

For example, Windshield replacement - $2300
Front control arm bushing replacement - $1900
Headliner replacement $1100

maybe its just the normal cost of Range Rover ownership - but the windscreen in particular seemed a bit extortionate and wondered if anyone else has experience here.

I am going to attempt a claim the insurance for that if I can - as this is a result of water leak during a recent storm...just seemed a bit... steep.

Just had a cracked windshield replaced by the insurance company. It's a heated version.

Safelite billed the insurer $1123.

So the estimate you received seems to be very high.

Matt - where are you located? Those costs can be trimmed significantly.

About three years ago I had my heated windshield replaced, by Safelite at a cost around $500.00. When I bought the truck it had a cracked windshield so (being honest) I paid out of pocket. As the insurance company was not involved the quote was much lower.

The control arm prices, for replacing just the bushings, is rather high. It is a straight forward job and shouldn't take more than an hour a side. Many just swap the entire arm as the labor is the expensive component.

Headliner - I can see that price if you go to the right wrong shop. Pretty sure you can get it done for about $500.00. The price you mentioned may include more than just the headliner and sunroof. Does it include the pillars and factory material or headliner? Nothing magical about heandliners - just labor to remove, labor to clean, labor to cover, labor to install and material (fabric and some glue).

IMHO, $1900 for a front control arm bushing replacement is a complete ripoff.

Granted I DIY everything, but fyr, quality bushings cost $20 each...and when you do the job, you would ideally replace the ball joints and mounting hardware nuts and bolts too. Total in parts is about $100 for BOTH sides...then labor. I think the typical markup for this job is around the $1500 mark for both sides. But if it's just replacing the bushings and NOT the entire arms, I don't see why you couldn't get an honest indy to do it for about $600.

For the headliner replacement, it depends on a couple of things. If the indy is going to use OEM parts, then you have to look at what the cost of the part is and that depends on your model year and accessories. For example, in my run-of-the-mill 2004, headliners are pretty inexpensive so the majority of what you are paying for is labor. However, in my buddy's 2012 Autobiography, a replacement headliner, just the part, costs about $5000 from Land Rover.

Front Control Arm and Ball Joints - Bought Delphi parts from Atlantic British for a little over $200. They did a price match with Rimmer Bros that saved me about $50. Local suspension shop installed for $225 including an alignment - 2 hour job. http://www.johnsonsalignment.com/

Removed and painted all interior plastic, replaced worn leather arm rest $450. Headliner quote was $650. May do later as mine is in good shape. Considering changing from tan to balck - https://www.yelp.com/biz/amadeus-upholstery-lawndale -

Just have to be willing to spend some time finding good specialized shops and not going to a dealer or Land Rover shop unless you absolutely need them - Keys, Software Flash etc..

No idea what year your Range Rover is, and no idea where you are at.
So maybe that is a good price.

If it were my 2003 Range Rover here in central Florida, that would be more like Land Rover dealership prices.
Rock Auto has front bushings from less than $5 each up to the mid-$20s. Whole new control arms run between the mid $30 to the upper $70 range.
An actual (heated) Land Rover windshield from the Land Rover dealership I source parts from is $621.

But wherever you are and whatever model year you have, the prices you're giving may be fair.

I'll wander a bit from your specific repairs to mention a few others, for folks who might use this thread as a future reference. I used to be a greasehead when younger, but now do it the lazy way with my credit card. Recent ROVER SHOP repairs on my 2004 L322:

-Alternator (water-cooled...OUCH): $1,140
-Water Pump, both main hoses, both drive belts: $846 ($250 additional for fan clutch)
-Transmission drain, refill, filter: $258
-Subsequent transmission drain, refill, NO filter: $175
-Brake system flush: $160
-Replace spark plugs (ouch, should have done this myself): $300
-Oil change for transfer case and both differentials: $222

My German Shepard told me that Ford Pinto repairs run MUCH cheaper, and therefore I made a "stupid" vehicle choice, but I don't believe him. He lies, especially when drunk.

I've never met a German Shepard that would not be truthful, but then again I've never seen a drunk German Shepard.

I had the windshield on my 2004 L322 replaced in 2014 at a glass shop (not dealer but same shop they would have sent it to) and they changed my insurance company $1275. The dealer quoted me $2275, or $1K just to send it to them and pick it up.

I also replaced the headliner myself by ordering the material online and following the RAVE manual on how to remove and install. I also cleaned up all the pillar covering with a solution of Simple Green and water applied with a soft brush. It came out beautiful and not hard to do if you have patience and can follow directions. I had never done it before, but there a few videos on YouTube that show you the technique of removing the old fabric and glue and laying down the new material - there is a technique, but it's simple, you just have to know what it is. Do your homework. It will take a full day, if you take your time and clean/restore stuff as you go along. A pro could probably do it in a few hours but you'll have broken clips on your pillar coverings and squeaks to go with it.
