Good evening. I am in the process of accepting new job that, unfortunately, will mean a lot more driving. I have a certified 2015 Range Rover Sport in Aleutian silver with Black Interior. My plan will be to buy a smaller car with better gas mileage. My assumption is that I would be better off selling myself rather than trading it in but I wanted to ask for advice here.

I plan to post it on the site classifieds and on auto trader; I am in no real hurry to sell but just want to consider all option.

JLR dealerships will purchase the vehicle back from you. The going rate for 2015 HSEs is between $62K to $63K in the Washington DC area.

Yes, you would be best trying to sell it outright if you have the time and tolerance for that. Personally, I do not do that anymore because I don't want people coming to my house expecting a free test drive. It just depends if you are comfortable with doing that. If so...then sell outright.

But if you find a good car you can trade-in and get the tax savings. I assume in NC that you only pay taxes on the difference. Something to consider.

My Dealer sells on consignment, maybe yours will too? They actually sell it as their Car, so they can offer finance, extended warranty etc.

I agree selling privately is a pain, and people with the means to buy a $60+k used car without financing are likely to buy new.

I would go to Carmax and get a free quote, just takes 20-30 minutes or so of your time. They give you a printed quote that's good for 3 days or so. I would also talk to the LR dealer and see what they would buy it for. I figure any other dealership would not be interested as they would likely send the car to auction unless you are buying your new car from them.

I don't know how NC handles the tax with trade ins since it's a highway use tax but at least it's only 3% right?

Thank you so much, it is a really exciting opportunity for me to help develop a new technology. Great advise on the private sellers, I hadn't considered that but you are correct. I will more than likely try to go to the dealership today. I highly doubt the JLR dealership is going to have the type of car I'm going to want as a daily driver so I might have to do some work on this.

I have a friend who was in the same situation as you, he drives an expensive car and his commute suddenly went from 5 to 50 miles a day, 100 miles round trip.

I told him to go and lease a Prius, which he did for less than $200 pm. So there's another alternative.

By the way, in almost every case, if you sell a Car on consignment you have to leave it at the Dealership, it has to be there when a buyer wants to see it.

In my experience, Car Max low balls you by a lot. Every time without fail they offered me 3-5K less. Privately selling is a hassle and you have to pay taxes anyways so you're not entirely done.

Going to the dealership is best because they will offer you more due to the fact that they can sell the car, since it's their brand, and everything is worked out there. Just simplicity and better IMO. If you're already going to get rid of it and want better mileage, look into their trade-ins there. Maybe even a Tesla. Cheers!

Not sure of your location, but do you get IRS reimbursement for mileage? Even with a V8 it doesn't cost me nearly the reimbursement rate in gas (not considering depreciation but you are already in the car and likely already suffered the worst depreciation). I think it's $.55/mile in the US.

I did consider that. But I will be putting quite a bit of mileage on it and I feel that I would be better served in a sedan. I am waiting for a quote from the dealership now. I have my eye on a certified Lexus GS350 F sport that is in the same dealer network. My hope is that I can work out a combo deal with them.
