My 98 RR hatch latch has been acting up. The tailgate closes and latches great, but the top hatch lid does not latch closed. One out of 10 times closing the hatch the latch works. But the other 9 times the hatch just closes but does not latch or lock closed.
I oiled the mechanism inside and outside with penetration oil and I think it helped but it didn't fix the hatch locking.
I tried to find some information on what exactly the unit is called to locate a new latch.

Any one else have this problem?

Just pop down your local car wreckers, it’s just a tailgate latch, I’ve not known one to fail, maybe take it out and have a look, could be a sticky lever or solenoid

my 2k was doing the same around thanks giving, it turned out to be a sticking push button. one of the loops on the return spring had rotted away from rust thus no return pressure and it stayed activated. a junk yard unit became a donor.
