Hi everyone,

I've got a new engine oil sump gasket ready to fit to the 2.5 diesel BMW M51 engine in my P38.

My question is, the Workshop Manual advises to use 'STC3373' sealant. Has anyone used this? It's nearly €45 which seems a lot. I wonder if its essential to use additional sealant and or if another type/producers variant would be ok? Is using just the gasket no advised?

Replacing gasket as part of a huge push to stop the numerous oil leaks.

Thanks,
Tom.

There is nothing special required for gasket sealant on the M51 engine. It is not high tec, the engine was used in the BMW saloon car of a few years ago.
Just use a proprietary non-setting engine sealant. There are lots around. I have previously used red Hermatite but it is difficult to find now. Hylomar Universal Blue non-setting would be a good choice.
Landrover stuff like that is vastly overpriced. I bet they don't sell much.
