I am looking at rebuilding my 4.6, the old girl is getting a little tired with nearly 200k miles on her!
Anyone know of a rebuild kit that i can get??
They sell them all day long for fords, chevys, etc etc etc. But I have yet to find one for the 4.6!
The heads i can get tested, clean up and relap all the valves with new seals.
I would be looking for the following:
Pistons and rings, possibly oversize.
Camshaft and lifters.
All gaskets and oil seals.
Thermostat and hoses.
Flexplate while I am in there.
Then the other smaller bits and pieces.
A new oil pump would be nice, if I could get a front cover for under $500!!
Ideas??

www.aluminumv8.com, rover V8 specialists. they don't exactly have a kit, but if you call them and say "full rebuild" they'll send everything you need, great guys. will even do the heads for you if you need them to (nobody around here would touch a rover engine, even though I explained it was a buick 215..)

you can get oil pump gears now from atlantic british, aluminimv8 may have them too.

oooooohhh......I hadn't seen THAT...hmmmm, the gears turn again....

Yeah, their site isn't very user friendly, if you click the little dots on the top left, that's their original navigation screen.

oh oh... is the chevy deal back on the mate?? :thumb:
i will give them a shout on monday. i have seen a used 140k mile motor for sale near me, so i will try to get it and rebuild it, then its a days job in making the switch! dont have to do everything in one hit that way...
the machine shop i use have a lot of experience with the buick 215's etc, and they said if the liners haven't slipped so far, leave them alone. thoughts everyone??

I'd top hat the liners. I'd hate to spend out for a rebuild only to have to take the thing apart again.

from what i can gather rich, that is nowhere near as popular here as over there mate. this makes it a lot more $$$ and a PIA to boot.
is the machine shop wrong when they claim that if at my mileage (over 188k), if they havent moved, chances are they wont?

ok, called d & d fabrication....(aluminumv8)
got prices for everything they said i would need for a "freshen up" kind of rebuild. i also discussed the liner issues some motors have, and they fully agree with my local machine shop in that if the block has not been overheated at any time, and the liners look good upon inspection, leave well enough alone. :thumb:
also recommended a crowler cam set. bearings can be had in standard or undersized also. for the oil pump they say to strip, clean and rebuild.
prices are:
main bearings $160
rod bearings $100
full gasket/seal set $180
cylinder head bolts $100
crowler cam set inc lifters and timing set $575
piston rings $160.
they say that most of the parts are an improvement over standard issue, especially the cam, bearings and rings.
shipping will be @$50.
so $1325 total in parts.
if the machine shop is nice to me, as well as the block/heads/crank, it may be doable for @$1500-1600 mark. maybe $2k if i replace the flexplate and a few other odds n ends.
so, assuming the block and crank are both in good shape, which i believe them to be right now, not a bad price for what would be basically a new motor. i would remove all the valves after the heads get checked and relap them all by hand, clean everything up, etc.

I put in the crower cam, chain and lifter set from D&D when I did a head-gasket job a few months ago, big improvement (besides not blowing steam), I'm well impressed with that cam in the rover engine.

cheers dennis, good to know!
i have an offer on a 140k mile complete p38 4.6 motor, so we shall see what happens. i may switch motors and rebuild mine, as i know it a whole lot better than the other one. that would give me all the time i could possibly want to do the rebuild, and leave the missus with "her" range rover when she doesnt want to drive the heep....
time will tell i guess.....
