My regular headlights and high beams stopped working. First the left then a couple days later, the right. Took to the dealer and they said the entire headlamps need to be replaced on both sides at a whopping $6600!! I can’t help but think there has to be a short or something else going on to cause this. I’m sure it’s POSSIBLE they both failed within a week of each other, but doesn’t seem likely. Of course my extended warranty won’t cover it. Any ideas???

What did the dealer say the issue is with the headlights? I'd be shocked if both units failed completely at 5 years old. That seems crazy. Are the housings compromised in some way (i.e. did they get cracked and water get in there) or is it an electrical issue? The price doesn't shock me for complete headlight units with associated modules and labor to install. I had a 2012 Audi A6 Prestige with LED headlights and the driver's side headlight got cracked by road debris - the replacement cost was well over $3k all-in, as the whole unit needed to be replaced, and the unit itself was $2700. I just question whether your headlights have failed or there's something else going on. If it's not covered by extended warranty then take it to an independent mechanic for an assessment.

You should be able to swap these out with little effort. Ebay has a ton more.

No crack at all. I am going to take it somewhere else for another opinion. Apparently you have to remove the bumper when changing out the headlamps which makes it more of a project then I want to do. I’m really of the opinion that something else is causing this though.

my left headlight recently went out. no error lights or anything. i replaced the ballast on the bottom of the headlight. problem fixed. ballast cost anywhere from $22-$125 dollars. if you are handy, it takes less than an hour to remove each headlight and fix. you dont need to fully remove the bumper.

I would start with the bulbs.... The replacement bulb is a D3S, 35W . From the workshop manual:
Headlamp removal is not required for the replacement of the xenon bulbs. The rear of the headlamp unit has a removable access cover which allow access to the bulb.
A large cover, which is rotated counter-clockwise to remove, allows access to the low/high beam xenon bulb.
.... the D3S bulb incorporates an integral igniter unit and both components must be replaced if the bulb fails.
.... Handling of the D3S xenon bulb must be performed using suitable protective equipment, e.g. gloves and goggles. The glass part of the bulb must not be touched.

if the bulbs go out, you would get a dash light, and you do not need to replace the bulb and igniter/ballast together.

No dash notifications came on. I will try ballast once I get it back. I also read that if you have a transponder close the the rear view mirror, headlights may act up. Not sure how or why, but I’m also going to take that off for giggles and see if it makes a difference.

So far taking the transponder of the window by the rear view mirror has caused my headlights to flicker on for a secon or two. More than the ZERO I was getting before. It’s so strange! I ordered the ballasts, bulbs and wiring and will take it in to a local mechanic and see if one of those is the answer. Still trying to avoid the cost of the entire headlamp units.

Anaheim Hills is the worst! Since your in SoCal, look up "Inland Rover" in Riverside, they are AMAZING and very affordable!
