If you have seen this elsewhere, I have posted it to multiple forums.

I just came across, as the title suggests, a 2012 Range Rover HSE 5.0 that does not run. The first thing I did was put a new battery in it. It cranks, but does not start. When you push the start button with your foot on the brake it doesn't crank at all. But if you first turn the ignition on and then step on the pedal and press Start, it will crank but still not start. I ran codes with the GAP IID, and an overwhelming amount of codes from seemingly every module came up. I saved them and cleared the codes, everything came back. If anyone has the time, could you please look at this mess and tell me what ideas may be floating around out there? Thanks in advance, please see the codes below:

How about more history. Is this RR new to you? What happened to the other battery? What are the specs on your replacement battery?

Hi, thank you, yes it is new to me. I have a salvage yard and it came to me from a used car lot that did not want to pay for a shop to diagnose it (or they secretly know the problem). It sat for a year, and now I have it. The battery failed the test and had no date on it, so I just bought a new AGM-H8 900CCA Die Hard.

  • U0001-88 (50) High speed CAN communication bus - Bus signal/message failure - bus is off
  • U0074-88 (50) Control module communication bus B off - Bus signal/message failure - bus is off
Your main communications are down. CAN Bus and Bus B. Might want to check the rear compartment, left side for water ingress. There is shorting going on taking down the whole deal. Have to start isolating with the purpose of finding the bad actor/connector.

Pull the rear apart and look for water or other damage - basically have to find where the damage to the networks is.

Other tips - condition of engine bay/battery connections. Also get a proper scanner - Snap On or what the dealer would use. My buddy has a Snap-on and it displayed codes & operations not covered with the Gapper, This was for the auto trans.

Is it possible someone changed the PCM, or IPC? Any signs of component being removed, or parts generally messed with, ie loose or removed covers, dash parts, etc?

Thank you for your response, I was poking around this morning and found mega corrosion in the Parking Aid Module. Looks like I will be pulling more apart and trying it in steps. I also have a pretty good Autel diag computer, I checked with it as well and it was just as overwhelming. I will keep digging, thanks again.

Not that I can tell. The only thing not right when I inspected it was one of the MAF connectors loose. But I will check the stored VIN on the modules, thank you for the idea.

Do yourself a favor before you go much further - remove the A-post lower trims and pull back the outer carpet corners (it’s a bit of a struggle) and you’ll see the main body harness to under hood connectors. There are three large multi plugs on the right side and two on the left side.

Carefully check for significant corrosion in those plugs.

If I had to guess the car has had some major water ingress in the interior.

First thing is to do a 'vehicle reset' using the GAP device and see what you have afterwards. And make sure you ALWAYS PRESS the brake pedal HARD when trying to start. It is brake pressure sensed.

I just had something similar, but it wasn't sitting at all, and I've owned it with no problems for 3 1/2 years now, and outside of some suspension replacements and oil changes, I've had no issues. That changed tonight.

Did about a 5 mile drive to grab a movie from Redbox and then grab dinner. Started up quick, no problems driving. I left it idling and went out to grab the movie. When I came back (literally 60 seconds later) it had died and was flashing every error message there is.
  • ABS
  • EBD
  • Stability Control
  • Emergency Brake Assist
  • Engine Temperature Indicator
  • Charging System
  • Suspension Fault
  • Gearbox Fault
  • Terrain Response

I had to hold the start/stop button in longer than usual to shut it down.
When I tried to start, nothing. Not even the click you usually hear when it's a dead battery.

Here are some interesting observations:

  • If I turn the headlights on, the dash indicator shows them as on, but they don't come on
  • If I click the lock button on the dash, it doesn't work, but the key fob still locks, mirrors fold in
  • When I lock/unlock with the fob, the side markers flash, but the front and rear indicators do not
  • Radio still works
  • Just now when I went to log all the errors, after a couple minutes, the radio display said "Low Power, Shutting Down"
  • Rear hatch does not open (electric release switch)
  • Clock did not reset

So it seems like some electrics are functioning, some are not.

My immediate thought was battery. When the tow truck came, they tried their little laptop charger but it didn't change anything. I had been waiting 2 hours, so I didn't press it and just had them take it home.

Battery is more than 2 years old, less than 3. For whatever reason, that's the one single receipt I can't seem to locate.

I will try jumping off a real source tomorrow morning, it's dark and I'm annoyed. I do not have a code scanner. Is there a specific model I need for the RR?

Anything else I can try? Ideas?

The closest shop that will do anything to this outside of suspension or oil changes will be a $300+ tow just to get it there, so if it's something we can ID and take care of before taking it out, I'm all ears.

Yes, first order is a fresh battery. Make sure it’s to Rover spec. For diagnosis I have both the GAP IID and an Autel DS808. The Autel is great, and it works with most car manufacturers. But it doesn’t do some of the programming. The GAP is not the best interface, but is designed specifically for Land Rover and can do programming and has more control over changing things in modules. Between Rover, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz I have spent way too much on diag tools. But I use them for work too.
Be careful trying to jump start your truck. They don’t like it. If you don’t get a new battery, I would put a slow charger on it overnight with the terminals disconnected.

These major malfunctions are certainly stressful. I am an industrial automation/computer engineer, used to this $hit and it freaks me out! For industry we have full visibility of the networks, know where the data is etc. With the toy-tools on the Rangie here that information is missing. I wish I had a solid, real-time network diagram and module status. Would certainly ease my mind.

Remove -ve Terminal on the battery. Leave for 20 mins and reconnect. Also check the condition and tightness of the +ve terminal as well. For sure a voltage drop (or spike) that caused the CPU's to go off-line en masse.

I disconnected the battery for about 30 minutes, it tested at 12.3v when disconnected. Hooked it back up and everything seems back to normal.
I’ll take it in and have the alternator tested, but it’s just a relief it fired right up.
Thank you everyone! Really appreciate the emergency advice!
