So to get automatic headlights in the car you have to program the car, and in what position does the light switch have to be for this to work? Also if I switch my 2004 to a 2010 switch that has automatic headlights will my also have automatic headlights?

BMW first gen systems are a world apart from 2010 systems no part of the lighting or switches are interchangeable. There is alot more to auto headlights than changing switches. First you need an appropriate Range Rover that had auto head lights as an option or standard. Automatic headlights were not offered until 2006 with the platform changes for the second gen L322s. BMW years only had three position switches... OFF, PARK and HEADLIGHTS.

Hard to remember but 2005 as a BMW year came with both rain sensor and automatic headlamps as standard (4 way switch)
