Hello All!

I currently own a 1999 P38 4.0S and have an issue with the transmission. I can't get it to shift into Drive but if I shift into 1st to take off and then into drive it will shift into 2nd, 3rd, and then into Drive just fine. There are no warning lights illuminated and I haven't had any other issues with the vehicle. I'm in the Seattle area and can't even find a shop with RR experience that's willing to check it out. Can someone help???

Have you found any LR workshops in Seattle?

Have you looked on the main site for the list of LR specialists in each State?

Re: 1999 P38 Wont Shift Into Drive But Is Fine In Other Gears

Thanks munichp38a for the prompt reply. I went to the link mentioned above and am having trouble determining whether the whole transmission needs rebuilding or just the clutch? Would you or anyone else viewing this be able to shed some light? I'm also curious as to what causes this to happen. The reason I ask is because I dropped the Rover off at my regular mechanic's shop to have the ignition coils replaced with no sign of this issue but once I picked it up, I started to have the problem immediately.

To answer your question p38arover, I have looked and found two shops that deal specifically with these vehicles. I have done business with British Auto Center as well as Biggs Automotive and contacted them both for help. This is the second time that British Auto Center has turned me away claiming to not be able to fit me in for weeks but I honestly feel like it's a case of work avoidance. I also gave Bigg's a call and he almost immediately referred me to a transmission shop.

Any additional help would be greatly appreciated...

I have worked with Steve (Bigg's) for years. Whichever shop he recommended you to would would be a top notch choice and familiar with our rigs. Most any transmission shop will be able to handle the rebuild or repair. For sake of time see if you can find a shop to do an exchange. An exchanged unit would have the same warranty of your rebuild and can easily be done in a day.

I was referred to Eastside Transmission in Bellevue. I just called and spoke to Jerry who seems to be familiar with the Rovers. I'm dropping it off tomorrow after hours and they'll be able to check it out on Wednesday. I'll post back once they get me some information.

Great choice. I am not familiar with Jerry, but they did the tranny on my old Jag a couple years back. It's done over 50K since without a hiccup! :thumb:

Must be something in the air, as it just happened to me yesterday in my 2000 4.6 HSE. I was hoping it wasn't anything mechanical as when you select drive from taking off in 1st>2nd>3rd it works fine. Oh well, time to find a specialist :(

Cheers,
Keels.

Dropped the Rover off last night after hours at Eastside Transmission in Bellevue. Hopefully they'll have some information for me today. Will post back once I hear from them...
