A few months ago I purchased a 1989 Range Rover for my winter vehicle (I live in Michigan). It's a rust bucket with bad brakes, shocks, etc. (oh the list goes on), but it runs reliably and that's my main concern. The guy I purchased it off of didn't have the owners manual so I have been in the dark on certain things. This really became an issue when the alternator failed and I had to replace it with a Worldwide rebuilt that the posts and leads didn't match the original Lucas, but I finally got it figured out. The more I work on it, the more I find myself intruiged with it. The questions I have are probably simple to answer for those of you who have an owners manual or a Chiltons/Haynes, so I am hoping someone can help out. Here goes;

1. On the lower dash there are a few push buttons. There seem to be two defrost buttons and I assume one is for the rear defrost, but since it doesn't work I can't be sure. The environmental controls SEEM to have a setting for a defrost mix with the floor; so WHAT is the second button for? And which is the rear (one is a straight window picture, one is a arc window picture).

2. On the same panel is a button that looks like a double lane highway going under a bridge. Pushing it seems to have zero effect. What is it for??

3. Under the passenger seat, in the rear, is a cable I can pull out that looks like it has an RJ45 jack on the end (network plug). Since Ethernet really was in it's baby stages in 1989 (Token Ring or BN20 was the norm), I can't imagine WHY it would be on a vehicle (diagnostic machines surely wouldn't have used CAT5 cables to connect then. It doesn't LOOK like it was an add on later (the wear/color matches the rest of the cables), so my best guess is that it was factory install. What in the HECK is it for??

Thanks for taking a look and answering (if you do)!!!!!!

Danke Eric!!!!

Why the button on the dash for defrost when the environmental controls (a slide lever) seem to indicate a mix between the floor and defrost? Am I reading that slide lever wrong? As in; if I don't push that button I have no defrost? I haven't noticed an issue with the windshield and I have never used that button but maybe once.

Can you please define "Rave CD" as well? Any searches come up with Rave music CD's...
