Vibration and smoke coming from left rear wheel

Memorial weekend, traveling down the highway and the car begins to vibrate and I smell a burning smell (similar to what it smells like when you double clutch a manual too much). I pull off the road and see smoke coming from the rear left wheel and a white ring around this (see picture) are of the wheel. I cannot figure out what caused this because the automatic emergency brake works fine and there is no strange noises when applying it when stopped. The only thing that I have noticed was the low tie pressure indicator came on before entering on the highway and I stopped and check all tires and put the recommended PSI. I had it towed and probably will not know anything until Tuesday, so the long weekend without my Rover..not cool. Any ideas on the probable cause would be appreciated. Love this car, hope it is nothing major.

    Thanks,

I had the same problem too. It was the rear brake shoe locked up. I had to buy new brake shoe, rotor and plastic plug.

Smoke could be from brake pad - sticking caliper ? Or emergency brake sticking. Or something like wheel bearing ... All of those are relatively low cost items to fix - well at least compared to differential etc.

Re: Vibration and smoke coming from left rear wheel

Looks to me like a bad caliper (maybe due to completely worn out pad); the scrapping on the parking brake housing looks like medal rub).

OBTW, it would be useful if you put your car's series and year in the signature. I guess if I was really good I could guess at it from your wheel design.

Re: Vibration and smoke coming from left rear wheel

Is that what the white area is, the parking brake housing? If so, I really hope it was not damaged too bad. The brakes were not symptomatic before this happened, would't I have felt some difference in the brakes if the brake pad was worn out or no?

Also, I will take your suggestion and in the future put the car info in. Thanks,
My Land Rover is an all black 2008 Range Rover Sport HSE. If there is more information that I need to provide than this, let me know. Also will update my profile.

I had it towed to the nearest shop since I was travleing but I am not sure they specialize in Land Rover's or not. If this was a brake pad and caliper issue do you think a Land Rover specialist is required in this situation? They do not open until Tuesday so I will not know anything until then.

    Thanks,

If you need new caliper - they will have to probably get it from
Nearest dealer. Brakes are generally not that much different from other cars - just make sure they know how to release and adjust the electronic parking brake - hopefully their shop computer supports land rover diagnostics and can do that ....

Re: Vibration and smoke coming from left rear wheel

Here is the latest on this issue f mine. The local shop you is certified to work on Land Rovers has confirmed that it is the Actuator and it will cost $2000 to fix. The white ring shown in the picture was caused by heat from the inside, which burnt the paint off the wheel. This is very disappointing to have a $2000 after purchasing the vehicle only 6 months ago and there was no way of telling that this sort of thing would happen. The part alone they are saying is $1200 but I found it here for just of $900. http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/LR019223G

Anyway, just posting in case others have this issue. I've checked the recall list and it is not a part that has been recalled, but perhaps it should!

You can easily live w/o the EPB...just have them loosen up the brake shoes inside the drum...but those shoes don't usually seize up by themselves unless someone was messing around with the brakes. Are you sure nobody was doing any work there just recently?

On my 08, when the EPB seized, nobody had touched the brakes: just seized. Fortunately, I had an extended warranty, cuz $2000 sounds about right.

On my 2013, I don't use the parking brake unless parked on a hill.

Re: Vibration and smoke coming from left rear wheel

Yeah, none of the recent maintenance I had done on it involve the rear wheel at all. I felt this was very strange also since I had hardly ever used the EPB and I it occurred when I was driving down the highway at 70. I talked with the, today and they said the shoes are fine. I will be EPBless for a while.

Re: Vibration and smoke coming from left rear wheel

The garage said the part was $1200 (which includes a warranty) and then 5 hours labor, but I mentioned I found the part (link in this thread) for $924.00. The labor is so high because they said they would have to remove the gas tank to get to the Actuator.

Thanks everyone for your help and wisdom/experiences...good to know this is an active and informative forum.

    Kind Regards,

Re: Vibration and smoke coming from left rear wheel

You do not need to remove the gas tank...the actuator is bolted to the rear frame cross bar...no where near the gas tank. It's not an easy job for sure in terms of time, but once it's on the rack, you can get to it. There is time spent on re installed the box, the cables and then the multi step process of re-activating. You may want to go another route:

Check with your local dealer and see if they give you a discount as a member of the local Land Rover club..., then find a local Indy shop...you'll save quite a bit in the process should you choose to get it repaired
