High idle and popping issue - insight appreciated

    Hey there,

I recently completed an engine conversion on my 1988 RRC from the old 3.5L to a 4.6L.
In doing so, the ECU was converted to 14CUX Tornado with updated ignition coil and amplifier, with adjustable fuel pressure regulator from RPI.

The engine appears to be timed appropriately, fuel pressure is set at 40psi, the TPS is at 3.5v closed and 4.75v open, and the AFM is at 1.88, but I have a high idle, maybe 1200-1300rpm and and slight popping out of the tail pipe that isn't quite a full backfire. I backed off the timing in an effort to bring the idle RPM down and it developed an actual backfire.

The O2 sensors did have build up on them but not sure if you can clean and re-install.

Curious what else I should look at. I don't know how to check for vacuum leaks which could be a contributing factor.

Anywho, open to thoughts from more experienced people. I may have left out some details but questions will likely refresh the memory.

    Thanks!
    Cass

Replaced O2 Sensors just in case and I'm still having issues with the high idle. Going to see about finding somewhere that can smoke check the vac system for me. I'm hoping its either a leak in the Vac system or the AFM/MAF. Not sure what it might be if either of those don't solve it.

Mostly resolved with timing. Engine now running great when not hooked up to the AFM/MAF. Slight popping issue when AFM/MAF is hooked up.

Have you cleaned your MAF yet? Trying cleaning it with MAF cleaner and see if it corrects the issue. If not, you should pick up a good MAF.

I'm a little unclear about cleaning the MAF. There doesn't appear to be anything to clean really...
There is no screen, and I'm not sure if that in and of itself has an effect. The barrel looks pretty clean otherwise. I'll see if I can attach a pic soon. Am I missing something?

    To clean the MAF
Use use a mass air flow cleaner available
    Most anywhere.
    And spray the inside
And it was suppose to have a screen
If it’s dirty you most likely can’t tell
    So give a good cleaning
    It can only help

Fair enough, I'll give it a try. Can't hurt. Thanks!

i was having trouble starting the rover after having parked it warm, it would either not start at all or start, run really rough and then stall. i changed the MAF, cap, rotor, stepper motor, & coolant temp sensor. now i can't get it to stay running, it will start then instantly die, sometimes if i can push the gas pedal in time, it will stay running, as soon as i take my foot off the pedal, the rpms drop and it dies. i am smelling fuel while this is happening. i bought a fuel pump and filter, thinking maybe i'm getting fuel, just not enough. any insight would help. another thing that seems to be a trend is the replacement and the relocation of the ignition control module.
