    Knocking noise from crankshaft pully?

    Hi All,
Further to previous post, I have subsequently found that the apparent knocking (it sounds as though someone has a piece of 4"x4" timber inside the motor and is banging it against the block, its no so much metalic in sound but dense, sorry best description I can think of) is coming from the pully attached to the end of the crank, does this have a bearing? I can see oil is seeping past the seal. This so called knocking seems not to be affected by engine rpms. I have checked the flexplate as best I can without removing transmission, I have also carried out sound checks with a screwdriver placed on the heads above each piston (yeah somewhat basic I know), but all seem ok. What else can I do before committing to removing the motor?
Thanks to those of you who have already responded to previous posts.
I swore black and blue I wouldnt buy another RR (my fifth) but they are addictive.

Sure sounds like the noise I had with the broken flex plate.

Can you feel it when you put your hand on the engine.

Re the crank nose, the main bearing is a couple of inches back at the front face of the block. The oil pump is inside the timing case right behind the oil seal. Could it be making the noise?

I assume you have checked the pulley for tightness. They have been known to come adrift and destroying the keyway in the cranshaft - but I'm not sure tha this occurs on the V8. It's not uncommon on the 200 and 300TDi diesels.

How about your timing chain, it connects the crankshaft to the camshaft??
I never heard of one breaking but they do stretch!!

Have replaced the oil pump and timing chain to no avail. Noise has not changed. If it is the front crank shaft bearing then obviously motor has to come out? Not much else I can think of. Will keep you posted as to cause.

Did you find out the cause?

Re the flex plate, I recently found mine was broken again. The break was visible after removing the cover plate off the lower front of the bellhousing.
