    Old HeVAC Unit - w/pics...

Well as Ive said in my other post about my A/C problem I replaced the HeVAC control panel today. Its a part I always wanted to replace anyway as the one that came with the vehicle always did look a bit tatty and the screen was slightly scratched and I could always see the scratch from then on...

Well here are pics of the old one and it had a few suprises in store for me when I took it to bits...

As you can see it looked a bit old and tired...

Strange, part number is AWR1012, its stamped 1995 but I own a 1998 vehicle?? Looks like someone, maybe the previous owner?, had the HeVAC unit replaced but did it on the cheap... Looking up that part number you will find a tech bulletin describing how it shouldnt be used with vehicles that have the outside air temp sensor located behind the bumper like mine does. Annoying, especially if the person I bought it off knew about it as well!!

    Main motherboard out...

Underside of main motherboard - looks like something wasnt right here...

Back of the main display/control board... (hows that for easy light replacement )

Hmmm, looking around I spotted this on the rear of the display/control board. Seems this unit has seen someone try and repair it - badly i might add!

Front side of the display/control board. Looks like more damage and old age on the board, no wonder the display wasnt working properly!!

Overall view of the thing in pieces.

Cant actually believe the thing still worked after seeing the state of it. Not only that I cant believe it worked (kinda) since I had the vehicle which is now coming on for a year and a half. Hopefully with the new panel I will enjoy no more book symbols, no more tapping the screen to try and get a display and lastly some smooth temp changes.

Ah well, thats my pic posting done for today

    good pics.

See the main display of the unit. does the green backlight colour come of a thin sheet of transparent green plastic which sits against the LCD panel?

Can the sheet be seperated from the LCD ?

( you can see where i'm going with this )

yes, I know where your heading. The colour of the screen does come from a thin film of green plastic mounted behind the screen itself.

I'll take some pics later to show you but as you are probably thinking you could replace the film and get another colour (from the way it looked to me anyway).

Changing the colour of the buttons would be ALOT harder though. Each button does pop out BUT instead of each button having a little green plastic film piece behind it like the screen it seems as though the green stuff is actually painted on so changing the colour of the buttons would be more difficult.

As I said, i'll take some pictures when I get home so you can see

    you got my idea right.

but I just had another thought. imagine you took out the green layer and instead replaced the bulb it with an RGB led.

Then you could make the colour of the backlight change with temperature.

Blue for cold, green for normal, red for hot !

    sad? completely irrelevant? oh yes!

As promised, here are the pics. As you can see its just a film that makes the colour. However, the film HAS to be there in some form to diffuse the light from the bulb otherwise I should think it would only light up the centre of the display and make the edges look dim. I guess it would be easy enough to make another colour with another bit of film (if thats your cup of tea)

    Pics of the film itself...
