    BMW diesel belt tensioner

Steering became heavy, I thought the power system was failing, then I noticed the ign light on, followed by clattering noises from the engine, popped the hood & noticed the serpentine belt was loose, the small hydraulic belt tensioner wasn't pushing the wheel on the crank, got the jack handle from the boot & sort of 'jemmied' it & it went 'bang' & was working again, all back to normal.
I read somewhere that these little hyd cylinders must be kept upright or they get an airlock, so my question is, can they loose oil? mines dry, no apparent leak, can they be topped up? what makes them stick, & can they be 'unstuck, this same thing happened about 6 months ago, so it may be getting worse.
    Any diesel owners had similar?

It could be the arm seizing on the shaft - seen this a few times, and had a job to get them apart.Relieve the high spots with a file and reassemble with a small amount of grease.
