Mk4 BMW Sat Nav Unit with Dark / Dim Screen Output Problem

Hi, I am in need of some help as I have searched extensively online for someone with a similar problem to mine, to no avail.

I recently (knowingly) bought a faulty BMW mk4 sat nav upgrade replacement unit for the mk3 unit in my 04 Vogue for £100, as a gamble. I basically asked the guy off ebay if he'd take £100 to end the auction early if I picked it up from his house as I was holidaying nearby and he took it. It was advertised as working but displaying a very dark screen: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140849895611?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p398 4.m1423.l2649#ht_2736wt_1165

Being fairly technically minded I thought maybe I could get it working properly again with my RR, but after spending yesterday messing about with it and searching on the internet I have run out of ideas. The output to the screen is still really dark and basically unusable whilst driving.

I have attached images of the unit, including all stickers / codes etc, and a couple of shots of the screen - you have to really squint to see the menus etc, but they ARE fully accessible / functional and navigable if you look hard enough.

So far I have tried four different firmware changes (V28, V30 and two different V32's) to no avail. I have tried changing the brightness settings, I have messed about with some of the 'hidden' config menu settings, I have tried unplugging the TV module and running it, I have tried changing the TV module settings, and probably a few other things I've forgotten as well.

From information on the hidden config menu I can see that it seems to have come from an X5. The guy who sold it to me seems to think the problem is a compatibility issue with his 2002 M3.

I have downloaded the NavCoder (http://www.navcoder.com/) software and have ordered a USB interface (http://www.reslers.de/IBUS/index.html) in the hope that I may be able to fix it cheaply by changing some settings with that, but I am unsure of any success tbh.

Has anyone else ever encountered or fixed this problem before? Am I stuck with a dud?

I have no direct knowledge about your problem. I can only relate a similar problem I had with a laptop with a LCD screen issue. It turns out they are back lit by a auxiliary light source. Some type of bulb, like a fluorescent bulb. My bulb burned out and needed to be replaced. The symptoms were exactly as you describe. However, I don't know if this applies to the NAV screen?

The fluorescent backlight is dead. I have noticed as these trucks (and all the other BMW vehicles) get older these screens are becoming progressively dimmer, and I guess some of them are starting to finally die completely. The good news is that on the BMW E38 forums there is a very inexpensive replacement you can do of the screen module all by itself if you are competent at disassembling the unit, and it's not terribly difficult. In that case, people usually replace the screen due to scratches, but since it's a self contained system, it would likely solve your problem as well. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly where they obtain the screens or what thread it was in, so you might have to search to BMW nav LCD replacement or some such thing.

I'm not so sure guys because the mk3 still makes it works fine, as does the screen when it is switched over to TV with the mk4 unit plugged in.

My MKIII Nav got progressively darker and darker in its display capability just before it died completely. It's a sample size of 1 so it might not apply to your situation, but when I bought a new MKIV the screen brightness went back to normal.
