    L322 4.4 M62 Specialists around ?

    Hi all

    I have a 2004 RR L322 with the 4.4 M62 engine. I have been fighting ticking in the engine for long time now and have run out of ideas.

    The ticking sounds similar to stuck hydraulic lifter and only noticeable at idle or up to about 1500rpm. The ticking comes from the top end at aft left side.

    I have already removed the sump and front of engine to inspect timing chain guides but all normal. I then replaces timing chain tensioner and both vanos units and vanos solenoids. I have tried different oil types and grades but the tick remains..

    I think now I need to have some M62 specialist to look at this for me...

    can anybody recommend a good shop who specializes in RR and are experienced with this engine ? I am located south of London.
    I guess the best people might be some BMW engine specialists as the M62 is a BMW engine.

    any advises will be apreciated

    Hi,

    Can you record a video with sound of the ticking, post it to YouTube and link it here?

    Depending on what you mean by "ticking" the most common reason, like you said is hydraulic lifters. They need sufficient oil to operate.


    • Were the oil sprayer bars above each cam checked for any blockages and cleaned?
      • This is an easy job, just need to remove each valve cover and then remove the oil sprayer bars to check and clean them out. The oil passages inside those bars are incredibly tiny and can get blocked.

    • Has the oil pump screen been checked for any blockages? You ideally need to remove the two bolts that secure the oil intake spout to the oil pump and then remove it, dissassemble the screen and thoroughly clean it.
    • Have you run through the procedure for re-pressurizing hydraulic lifters? First, make sure you have sufficient oil, with the engine off and cold, check the level, ensure it is full. Then start your car, warm it up, and when it is at operating temperature, gently rev up to 3000rpm (some call for 4000rpm) and hold it there for 15 minutes. This gets proper oil pressure and circulation throughout the entire engine and should re-pressurize your lifters, assuming there are no blockages.


    All of this is assuming that what you describe as "ticking" is indeed the lifters.

    Long shot, but ck your spark plugs. I had one loose, sounded EXACLTY like a ticking lifter. Spent months chasing it down. Even got opinions from shops, and they told me lifter problem....

    I had the same exact problem with my 2004 HSE with the M62 engine. I chased everything, spark plugs, fuel injectors, exhaust leak, oil passages, timing chains & guides, rebuilt Vanos units, NRV valves, tensioner, etc. you name it, and nothing fixed it until I had the heads pulled and rebuilt.

    I understand that by having your engine's cylinder heads rebuilt, the ticking went away: I don't fault you for rebuilding the cylinder heads: if you have the ability, time and budget to do that, then that's great! But I'm guessing that as part of that rebuild, each hydraulic lifter was removed, tested for functionality, reprimed and then reinstalled. Is it possible that one or more lifters were the sole problem and that in the process of the rebuild, the lifter issue was addressed and the ticking problem thus fixed?

    If that is the only thing that was wrong with your engine, I don't see why the lifters couldn't have been removed while the heads were still attached, and replaced (or inspected, cleaned and replaced) in place. I would first attempt that before pulling a cylinder head any day. I would only pull a cylinder head if it absolutely needed it (i.e. loss of compression, damaged valves, or multiple valve stem seals gone in combination with super high mileage and lower than optimal compression).

    From my BMW 7 Series days, I have a friend in Amsterdam who is a M62 guru. Though not a professional mechanic, he would from time to time be called in by BMW dealers to solve otherwise unsolvable problems.

    Hi Helgi,

    I'm an owner of "the most quiet M62 L322 in Moscow". Was also in fight with ticking in the engine, completely rebuilt it, but surprising reason was the power steering pump. Try to detach accessories belt and run motor for very short time without of it.

    I hope that helps with diagnostics.

    When you say left side - are you referencing bank 2?

    If so I had the same issue with my 2004 4.4 after a head swap. It sounded like the noise was around Bank 2 Vanos to cylinder 6. I checked everything and found nothing wrong. Everything was new even the cam tensioners in the end. Finally the tick went away after my daughter drove it for a few months - she drove it five days a week about 30-150 miles each day at 50-70mph. Lots of interstate between job sites.

    In the end I concluded some crud must have been in a lifter and the driving cleared it out.
