There aren't any "rods" on the lower tailgate latches.

The two electronic latches (also known as actuators) are independent of each other and are each electrically released by the push button on the top of the lower tailgate.

When you press the lower tailgate release button do either of the latches make any sound?

With the upper tailgate open, if you stand with your belly area touching the center of the lower tailgate, use the index finger on each hand to reach down into the gap between the body aperture and the latch on each side of the lower tailgate and you will "feel" a black plastic tab. Using your belly area to slightly push the tailgate into the body aperture, press down with each index finger until you manually pop the latches open. It can take some force to pop the release(s) so don't be shy.

From the picture link above, the release tab is the plastic piece on the upper part of the latch and is closer to the body than to the rear of the car (IOW on the leading edge of each latch).

You either have a bad latch (they are handed left and right) or a loose/corroded connector to the lower tailgate. Check the multiplug/connector immediately behind the spare wheel on the rear panel, slightly left of center for corrosion.

If you press the open button and hear the unlocking motor pull on it sharply as it's making the noise and it'll most likely open unless something is physically broken with it... Then once open pb blast all the rust away from the locking mechanism on either side and grease them. Mine occasionally has this issue too, rust/contamination gums up the hook that locks the gate in so hopefully a sharp pull does the trick... Possibly shooting wd40 in the gap on either side may loosen it up as well.

Anvilrob. Once again no one can underestimate your knowledge. I will now happily lubricate and test with the tailgate open. It's always interesting how this tailgate area seems to be rust prone if there is to be rust.

This is where you press the manual release tab on the top of the lower tailgate latches.

One either end/side of the lower tailgate.

Press down very firmly on each at the same time and you will be able to manually release the latches.

I sent you a PM a couple of weeks ago and didn't hear back.

(If one side "motors" but not the other when you press the electric release you probably need to replace the actuator on the dead side. If you're troubleshooting the problem once the tailgate is lowered, remember that the module goes into sleep mode after 16 minutes. To wake up the module simply open and close the driver's door.)

Here's the inside works of the lower tailgate:

    Attachment 271796

There is an electric actuator either side. They are "handed" left or right and so the correct "side" must be ordered.

    Attachment 271798

To test the actuator signal, detach the plug and connect a voltmeter to the harness plug pins. You need to see 12v+ when pressing the electric release. If you have 12v+ you need to replace the actuator.

    Attachment 271800

The actuator is held in place by two torx screws which bolt "through" the latch and a 13mm bolt which is under a rubber cap/sleeve connecting the lower tailgate cable strap.

There is a [male] square drive on the end of the actuator which locates into a [female] square recess in the latch.

You must line these up correctly and reinstall the two countersunk torx screws and the 13mm bolt connecting the cable strap (and test for release) before putting it all back together again.

boot half locked but wont open l320

thanks rob for all your and everyone else sorry but I have the l320 without the dropdown tailgate.
both tailgates pivot from the roof and the glass section swings but it's the lower section that remains half open.
I did take it in to get a quotation but they wanted to book it in for a diagnostic test, but I didn't have faith they'd done it before and know they don't mind to give you Bill shock
