Can the original head unit be made to switch on auto with ignition, always selected to CD?
If so then could the replacement header (which in my case is a Dynavin) have its RCA output spliced into the factory CD feed? That way I wouldn't need any extra amps or cabling, and would retain use of the full HK system?
I removed the CD changer and am installing the factory head unit there. I have to extend wires and optical connections. Then I am installing a Pioneer 8201NEX where the factory head unit sits. In additional I am installing a digital sound processor and 3 small amplifiers for the audio as well as a small sub. The factory amp will stay but all the speakers will be removed.

Integrating the factory steering controls looks to be a fun project, but worst case is I have seen others tear down the clock spring and run a new wire for steering controls.

I am now told that I can replace my header with a slightly newer model (still stock LR) and this will give me the option to add an AUX socket.
(it may just be the difference between LR units YIK500090 and YIK500061 but I can't find any detailed spec on either)

Can anybody confirm this, and if so how do I find out exactly what revision I have/need, and what AUX socket hardware I will need?

I have been trying the FM Modulator approach with my iPod but to be honest it's rubbish and I need to keep changing frequencies as I'm driving along.

Hi Brian - did you ever do an upgrade on the 06? I have a few ideas for you if not, the tough bit is connecting to most - have you found a device that takes analog input and converts to the most signal? Also the ipod adapters are quite cheap now

I gave up after a few audio shops quoted 3-4k to install a new pioneer system and ....
    1. burned a bunch of CDs from my Apple iTunes collection. At least I feel better about all of the money I spent buying those songs.
    2. bought a really good bluetooth speaker that I can turn on and off with my iphone. Use that to stream music. Keep it back in back seat and have it plugged in to keep charged. Not nearly as good as the trucks system but way better than the FM transmitter solution.

What year is yours? I have done a conversion to the BMW NBT system in my 2003 l322. It needs access to the ibus and BMW can system. I believe the earlier 2006s still had this - ibus for the clock and can for some of the other systems. The nbt then has a most output for the amp. I have not tried this yet but can’t see a problem with it

Yep it is touchscreen, very responsive & the audio is great, the instructions though - terrible, having to go through it myself! As before the only issue is the steering controls as there is only one wire from the unit for the keys and on my last one that i fitted there were two and the steering functions worked fine.

All done, except I couldn't work out the steering controls, save that for another day!
