Out of Warranty Rear Differential Leak

I took my car into the dealer for a leak from the rear differential. It was diagnosed as the pinion seal failing. They quoted me at $550 for parts and $1450 for labor. Does this seem right? I saw online that Land Rover sells a pinion repair kit for about $140. Is the dealership trying to leverage that they’re the only ones that can fix it in the area due to special tools? Any advice or do I just swallow it and go for it?

Sorry I didn't see this when you posted--I had this done with extended warranty and would have been charged $990 total including parts and labor. $1450 just for labor sounds insane.

I'm sure there is a recall for this, which should have been done whilst under warranty?

Maybe try to get them to do it as a goodwill and you only pay in a %?

But that price looks like a total rip-off, mine only cost R7700, which at today's exchange rate works out to around $560.
