Uh oh - rear differential leak?

Noticed some oil in the parking spot at the rear of the car. When I looked, I found an oily rear diff. I just had the car serviced... Does the rear diff fluid get changed/checked? https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-...2BB4M8W-XL.jpg

In theory, all fluids should be checked whenever it's in there. In reality.......

It's way too early for any 494 owner to need diff fluid change. I would doubt that they bother to check it this early. Most likely it as simple as a seal damaged during assembly.

They may have checked it and topped it off and left it oily from some spillage. If you want to save a trip in clean it off and check again in a few days to see if it's still getting coated.

Yep, been there. Saw oil spot, took it in, and was told rear pinion seal was bad, which required they rebuild it during Visit #1. Scheduled Visit #2 for the following week, showed up, and was told they had another one up on the lift and found out they needed a special tool that they didn't have. Went home and received a follow up call a week later that the tool was in, and so scheduled Visit #3. Dropped of the car and was told they probably needed it overnight. When i hadn't heard anything at the end of day 2, called, and was told there was yet another special tool they didn't have, but that Land Rover was lending them via overnight package. Ended up getting the my RRS back 2 days later. Love the vehicle, not the service.

I had the same issue. Had an oil spot on my garage floor (now permanently stain). Took it in and it was a seal leak. Replaced same day.

Also have rear diff leak. Spotted by local LR tech (independent shop) doing oil change #2. Called 3 local dealers, earliest I can get it in in Jan 18. Don't know if that reflects well on # of vehicles needing service?!?

Re: Uh oh - rear differential leak?

Diagnosis was front pinion seal leak at the rear differential. Repair was covered under warranty.

In addition to the reports above, there are a few additional ones on the UK RRSport site as well. Seems like this might be a common issue.

Re: Uh oh - rear differential leak?

Front pinion seal at rear differential was leaking. Replacing the seal did not fix the leak.

Replacing seal and bearing fixed the leak, but now differential is making a weird sound.

LRNA is replacing the diff under warranty. 8 days and counting without my car.

Re: Uh oh - rear differential leak?

Makes sense. I was told that the fix required a rebuild and that if after the rebuild, if I noticed increased noise, LR already committed to putting a new diff in.

    Wow.
Sounds like they knew it was an issue already, not cool.
Hope the loaner is as good as the Rover though.

Re: Uh oh - rear differential leak?

It's a common issue in any vehicle with 4wd. Leaks that can be just a seal leak not overhaul. I had a seal leak in my 2009 escalade hybrid at 195k miles

Re: Uh oh - rear differential leak?

All we have is 4wd rigs, and have yet to have one leak as new as the OP's did.....
Close to 200k miles is a LOT different than this guys situation.
Not to mention that the rear axle has absolutely no idea whether it is 2wd or 4wd. It acts the same either way......
