L322 to L405 owners, how was the transition?

Hello everyone, I was rather curious about former L322 owners who have since made the transition to the L405 and how their experience has been with the transition.

    1. What do you like most about going from the L322 to the L405?
    2. Are there any things that you miss about the L322?
    3. Has the overall driving experience changed for you at all? Better, worse, same?
    4. Have you noticed any major differences as far as reliability is concerned (factoring in that there will obviously be fewer issues with newer vehicles)?
    5. If you had to do it again, would you do anything different, like go for a different engine, different trim, later model year, etc.?

Re: L322 to L405 owners, how was the transition?

I will preface my response by saying that I really loved my L322. It was great. I had concerns about going to the L405 because Tata had just taken over the marquis. My L405 is light years ahead of the L322 in terms of ride. The suspension is a lot tighter. I don't feel the lean as much when I take the corners. The acceleration (SC) is blistering. The ride is smoother. Now, the seats are slightly wider. I find them to be less comfortable because of the massage frame. I preferred the analog gauges of the L322 to the TFT in the L405. Reliability in my L405 is far superior to the L322. Because I have a 2013, I have not had to deal with the tech issues of the later models. If you explore the forums here, it seems that most of the reliability discussions with the L405 center around technology and CPU programming (slow acceleration off of a rolling start).

I miss some of the cubbies in the L322. I also miss being able to tweak the cabin temperature with that center wheel.

In retrospect, I would purchase an L405 in a heartbeat. I would stick with the SC motor. If you are considering your options, I would unreservedly suggest that you make that change.

+1 to all stemikel said although for me this was a long time ago. I clearly experienced the change as an upgrade, due the the convenience features (push button trunk open/close, soft door close, ...).
I'd also say that I had a 2011 HSE before moving to a 2013 SC so the dash was a nice update.
I'd like to stress how much better the L405 drives.

Re: L322 to L405 owners, how was the transition?

I remember back when I did a test drive of the L405 in November of 2012. It was the very first one that my local dealer had on the lot. The salesman said that it was their demo and not for sale. I've been in love with the L405 every since that day! My L322 was in for an oil change that day and after I drove away from the dealer, it felt like my L322 was very outdated. Don't get me wrong, I still loved my L322 but the L405 seemed to be a huge improvement. Well, in January this year, I was finally able to get a gently used 2013 L405 with the 5.0 NA V8 like I had in the L322. The thing I like most about the L405 is that it's quieter and more comfortable than the L322. I also like the tech upgrades. I don't really miss anything about the L322 other than the shifter. The overall driving experience is better in the L405 in my opinion. My L322 was pretty reliable and I expect the L405 to be the same...my vehicles are always well maintained. If I could do anything different, I would like to have a 2017 L405 with the SC V8.

Thank you stemikel, totya and W84IT, for sharing your experiences.

So would you all say that the L405 ownership experience has had all the positives of your L322 ownership experience and then some?

And would it be fair to say the L405 has improved on every aspect of the L322 without compromise?

Re: L322 to L405 owners, how was the transition?

For me I actually bought a used 2007 SC L322 after I bought a new 2015 RR HSE (NA V8. The L322 was the reason I fell in love with the RR so I had to have one for work and small commutes. Even though the L405 is better in almost every way, I still prefer the L322 for a couple of reasons:

    1) I love the driving position, you sit higher than the L405 and since the L322 is boxier than the L405, I feel like I have a better control maneuvering the car in tight spots since you have a better view of the edges of the car.

    2) I'd say the seats are better in L322 but I have the HSE seats in the L405 so I can't say for sure.

    3) I love the sound of the 4.2L SC V8 of the L322, just feels more muscle-y and cooler. The V8 in the L405 sounds like a diesel.

    4) Just some details like the shifter is way cooler and more satisfying to hold than the hockey puck in the L405. I also feel like the dashboard is more unique in the L322 with the analog gauges and the plethora of buttons (I like a lot of buttons).

    5) Ok this might sound stupid but I actually really like the reverse parking sensor sound, a lot better than the streamlined sound in the L405. It gave the car a unique character (even though it's a BMW sound XD).
