A Book by John Brabyn PhD
Updated 1/19/04
A book about four wheeling, Range
Rover style, in the desert scenery of the historic Old West, is now
available. This compendium of desert Range Rover adventures goes
well
beyond the usual "back country byway" tour books to explore the rugged
solitude and history of the true Western outback. Full-sized pages of
lavish,
high-quality (Hasselblad) color photographs illustrate Range Rover
expeditions
to ghost town sites, beautiful desert scenery and little-used historic
trails, inaccessible to lesser vehicles. (Low resolution versions of
some
of the illustrations can be seen here
, here
and here
in the "Desert
Images" section of these web pages). Practical tips are provided on
route finding, maps and off-pavement travel precautions. The "Tread
Lightly"
principles of responsible
four wheeling to protect the environment are followed throughout.
The book is printed in expansive 8 1/2 x 11 format, with 28 full-color images including the cover illustration which depicts a Range Rover on a remote section of the Applegate-Lassen trail in Nevada. This extravagant use of large color photographs makes its printing costs high, and the $25 charged for the second printing barely covered the printing cost. The book is currently out of print, but if you are interested in obtaining a copy, please email me. If there is enough interest, a third printing will be arranged.
