Improving P38 Engine Bay Access
by Opening Hood to Vertical Position

While working on an engine replacement project, Ron Beckett discovered that access to the engine bay can be greatly improved on the P38A Range Rover by opening the hood/bonnet to the completely vertical position (see photo at right). This is especially helpful in such operations as lifting the engine out with a hoist.

Land Rover designed the hood so it can be opened to this extreme position and held there by retaining clips that are thoughtfully built into the hinges. The pictures below, kindly supplied by Ron, illustrate this procedure.

Ron reports "To lift the bonnet to the vertical position, one has to disconnect the black struts that normally hold the hood up when open. To do this, carefully prise off the retaining clip at the bottom joint of each strut. This will allow the joint to be disconnected and the strut to hang free. Pulling it off without removing the clip will break the plastic fitting. (Someone - not me - did this to one of my struts which means I'll need to buy a new strut.)"
