John Brabyn has explored the deserts and ghost towns of the West for many years. Avoiding the usual tourist locales and photo ops, he has instead sought out the most remote, seldom-visited areas, organizing numerous desert expeditions to secluded scenic and historic areas accessible only by primitive 4WD roads. His expeditions have also retraced historic wagon and railroad routes (including the most remote segments of the Emigrant Trail, the Pony Express Trail, the Twenty Mule Team Borax Trail, the Bodie & Benton Railroad route, and others.
John is an ardent follower of the Tread Lightly principles, striving to leave no trace and leave each area better than it was found. Wishing to preserve for future generations the ability to experience the desert and its history, he advocates preservation of environmentally responsible access to historic primitive roads -- the only practical and safe way to visit remote desert areas for most people except the superbly fit long-distance hiker. A believer in quality expedition equipment, he is also webmaster of the most popular Range Rover website on the Internet.
Toting his trusty Hasselblad at all times, he has gradually accumulated a portfolio of high quality images depicting many lesser- known spots of historic interest and beauty in the desert. His work has appeared in multimedia presentations, television programs, magazines, calendars, a book and other publications, and some of his ghost town images have toured the US in art exhibits. A selection of his images is now being made available to the public.
Image Quality
All the images offered are of the highest professional quality, taken
with Hasselblad cameras with
the
latest Carl
Zeiss lenses on low speed, fine grain film. The resulting 6x6 cm
negatives
and transparencies provide images with far better resolution and
quality
than is possible in the more common 35mm format. (The copies made for
viewing
on this website are naturally of far lower resolution and quality due
to
limitations of digital technology such as color reproduction,
resolution
on different monitors, and image compression to limit downloading
time).
Each print is meticulously made by a professional lab from the original negative or transparency, and is suitable for matting and framing according to your individual taste. Smaller prints are mailed flat with cardboard protectors, and larger ones rolled inside a shipping tube.
