.....And although I do read LRO occasionally, I've been shocked at some of the technical 'knowledge' they have imparted in the past. On one occasion I felt moved to email the editor when they had a P38 buyers guide. They had a photo of the rear quarterlight and a caption saying that 'even the quarterlights are heated'. I pointed out the the 'heater elements' are actually a radio antenna. Doh!

I subscribe to LRO magazine, it's worth it just for a laugh at the 'Question & Answers' section - some of the advise given out to P38 owners is just so blatantly wrong, I feel sorry for the person who asked the question. I think they should let Andy Cunningham answer all P38 questions as he's about the only that appears to know what he's talking about.

I've emailed them a couple of times to point out their P38 related mistakes, no reply from them ever..... funny that !!!

Oh, back to the topic of this thread .... I'm in UK, North West bit, near to Liverpool.

Cheers,
Chrisall.

I am in Durban, South Africa. That doubles the African contingent to 2 !
The numbers simply reflect the size of the various markets ,I suspect.
Whatever, I can honestly say that I could not have coped with my RR problems without the range of technical resources available on this forum.
Not knocking any of the other sources, but I have yet to find one with the depth of this one.

LRO was originally started back in 87 or 88 by three guys who ran a magazine called Van User. They tested a Land Rover 90 (pre-Defender) van and got more feedback on that than almost everything else combined. Hence LRO.
The first year or so's magazines included a fair bit of country sports stuff but that declined when they realised they could publish purely about Rovers. The three original guys bought their own and became major converts. Along the way the picked up enthusiasts to write for them, life-long Rover owners with regular jobs who wrote a few words a month as part of their hobby.

In 1993 one of the all-marques 4x4 magazines ( here in the UK that is! ) published a one-off special magazine called Land Rover World. That became monthly and is still going today. I find the articles lack depth, I'm not keen on the layout and its very Series and Defender biased.

In 95 or 96 LRO was outgrowing its tiny production facilities and so the original three sold out to a large publishing house. They have all since said it was the worst thing they ever did.
The new editorial team were motoring journalists but not long-time enthusiasts.
The new deputy editor, who came across as a bit of a muppet, went and bought himself a "fully rebuilt" Series 3. From a dealer. This truck went onto to generate most of the technical articles as they had to replace half the chassis, the engine and the gearbox in the first year.

Part of the deal with the original three guys was that they couldn't do anther LR mag for a given period of time. When Land Rover Monthly hit the shelves in 1997 the first few issues were edited by Cathie Howel. She's now Cathie Howel-Thomas, wife of the original editor of LRO and current editor of LRM. This magazine seemed to back with that format of long-time enthusiasts rather than professional journalists, though it seems to have lost that somewhat.
LRM also publishes a special North America edition.

In 2002 some of the LRM crowd split off to form Land Rover Enthusiast. This is edited by James Taylor, motoring historian, Rover fan and owner of at least one LR/RR since the late 80's. He's also the author of the only dedicated p38 book. Which does have UK/US(Lr's biggest export market)/Rest of world sales figures, I'll have to dig it out.

In terms of project vehicles/writer's cars, LRE has a guy who is on his second and LRM has one writer who has one (which has been coiled!!!) though you don't tend to see them in the magazine too much.

To sum up, I subscribe to LRE, buy LRM and glance through but seldom buy LRW and LRO.

Sorry to hijack the thread, I live in Aberdeen in Scotland btw.
