I want to add a trailer hitch to my RRS, the independant shop told me the only 1 they could find was from land rover and they wanted $1500 for it. To me that sounds like a lot. Anybody else added a hitch receiver to their rrs?

all you need is a quick release hitch piece.

They retail for 800canadian usually, but you can find them online for $570USD.

There is also a bolt on version by Atlantic British for $300USD.

Don't forget that you might also need the wiring, which is about $300 Canadian + install.

I just went through this yesterday with a dealership in Vancouver BC.

And make sure you get the correct one for your vehicle (LR4 or RRS series 2) as the LR3/RRS series 1 which will fit hangs down a lot and and is sometimes referred to as the plow. The correct one for your version does not hang down so much and as far as I am aware does not impede the removal of your spare tyre (not tire) if you get a flat.

Buy the LR wiring harness as it is simply plugs in and most times will work straight away with full functionally for the trailer and vehicle - though some have reported it might have to be switched on by the dealer (or a test book) but most have not needed this.

can you share what parts and model numbers you ended up picking up? And also where you bought from and how much?
I'm looking to add a trailer hitch on my 2012 RRSS and have no idea what to buy.
I don't care to pay the premium on the quick release hitch...

Wondering what the the most economical/functional way to get a hitch on there so I can tow a trailer.
Thanks!

I really don't think you want a curt hitch on this truck. You already have a hitch, you just need the mounting piece. There are tons on ebay. Get that and the harness.

EVERY time I tow with my rover I marvel at how awesome this hitch setup is. I'd do that. A curt hitch is just going to create unneeded holes in your frame, clearance issues and look dumb on the truck ... just my take. I've had 5 of these beasts.

Thanks for the input.
You're right..I already have that hitch piece...I just need the mount.

Can you confirm which mount piece is ideal if I do not want to pay the premium on the quick release?
Is it this one at AB?

As for the harness, would this be a good aftermarket harness from AB? Or would OEM be a better choice?

Just noticed that there is this package:
http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/TPSPORT

Looks to have the two parts above plus the arm and the ball that I'll obviously need.
Thoughts? Would AB be the best place to by a setup like this?

Lastly, these AB parts state compatibility up to an 09 RRS. Mine is a 2012 RRSS. Would it still work for mine? Or is my 2012 different from the 06-09 vehicles?

Thanks again!

I don't know what you will be towing but if you read the info on the bolt in compared to factory hitch the bolt in is only good for up to 5k trailer and 500 tongue weight. The factory hitch set up is rated at 7100 trailer and 550 tongue.

Hi Brimill1234,

Thanks for the input.

I'm going to be towing a track car that weighs about 3000lbs (hopefully will get closer to 2900lbs in the next few months). That said, the trailer I'm towing is a standard open trailer made of steel with a wood deck and fold down ramps. I'm not 100% sure of the length, but I believe it will be an 18' trailer (its not in my possession to measure at the moment).

How much do trailers typically weigh? Am i going to be too close to the 5000lbs limit in my case and maybe just bite the bullet and go with the OEM bolt on hitch? Or is there only an OEM quick release hitch?

For the record, this is what my rear looks like.

Be very cautious when purchasing the inserts used. More than a few folks have bought them used only to find the previous owners have disassembled them due to jambed or sticking locks. The safety of your cargo and everyone around you on the road depends on a firm but free moving lock assembly to hold that insert in place.

Thanks guys.

I was cruising Ebay last night and noticed a seller (with decent feedback) who had 3 of the quick release ones for sale.
Checked in on him again today and there was only one left so I ended up snagging it.

The post says its a brand new one and the price was really good so I just bit the bullet.

Now I need to buy a tow ball, pin and clip, ball mount and harness.

Any recomendations on which of these to go with?

Again, I'm going to be towing a 3000lbs car, along with a 2000lb trailer. So I'll need a tow ball and ball mount that is rated at the 7000lbs mark like the hitch.

Thanks!

I think I used this harness and 4 years later no problems.-

As far as the ball and mount I think a CTC setup would probably work.
Saw one on ebay for $35.00
Range Rover makes one that comes in a case with three different size balls etc., but way overpriced IMO. A set came with my car.

Darn. It looks like that harness is only good for up to 2009. My 2012 has a completely different wire setup and the only option they have is the OEM wiring harness for $100 more.

Anyone know of an aftermarket wiring harness that will work for a 2012 RRS?

The CTC mount I found is only rated up to 5000lbs...gonna have to look for a higher rated setup.

Hey All,

Just wanted to send an update in case it helps anyone else:

I ended up picking up the following for my 2012 RRSS:

OEM quick release hitch - http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/LR040248G
OEM Trailer Wiring Harness - http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/VPLST0072G
Curt 45036 Class 3 2" Ball mount with 2" Ball - https://www.amazon.com/CURT-45036-C...F8&qid=1490644538&sr=8-1&keywords=CURT+45036#

Both the OEM hitch and the Curt ball mount setup are rated for at least 7500 GTW (OEM hitch rated at 7716lbs). I'll be towing a track car to and from the track and should be well under 6000lbs GTW including extra wheels, tools and other misc items so so I'll be well below the limits of the setup.

Last request for assistance is with regards to the brake controller.

Came across this older thread regarding brake controllers and there is some great information here:
http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/43...-valuable-brake-controller-information-3.html

Curious if the Tekonsha Progeny 2 is still one of the better units out there? It seems that he unit available now is the exact same unit from 10+ years ago with no changes.
Just wondering if there is something newer that is more appropriate. Also, from reading this, it sounds like we need the connectors that are meant for a ford? And I can simply adjust the wires as per diagramed on this thread for it to work on my 2012 RRSS?

Thanks all!

I've been using the Tekonsha P3. It seems about the same, but the P3 is one better:). I used the Ford harness that plugs in under the drivers side dash (remove the panel above the pedals and reach up). It plugs in directly with no rewiring when using the factory harness.
Also, I'm still using my original LR3 hitch, which works great. Just remove it before offroading.
